Chapter 98:
Caroline walked toward the elevator, her footsteps steady and unhurried. She had won this round. But she knew with absolute certainty that Melanie would not stop. And the next time, the trap might not be so easy to dismantle.
Melanie’s face drained of all blood. She looked like a ghost. She violently shoved her right arm back into the white sling and grabbed it with her left hand.
“No!” Melanie screamed. She looked at Dr. Cromwell with wild, panicked eyes. “Don’t let her near me! She’s crazy! She’ll snap my bone on purpose!”

Dr. Cromwell frowned. He held up his hand, signaling Caroline to stay in her seat. “While I can’t force an examination, Melanie, refusing a medical assessment from our own staff in a workplace injury claim looks highly suspicious. I strongly advise you to consent.”
Caroline let out a short, cold laugh. She didn’t move an inch. She didn’t need to touch the fake bandage.
She slowly turned her head. Her piercing gray eyes locked onto Tammy. Tammy physically flinched under the heavy stare.
“Tammy,” Caroline said, her voice dropping to a smooth, conversational tone. “Since you were the only eyewitness, please describe exactly how I broke her arm.”
Tammy swallowed hard. She looked at Melanie, then back at Caroline. “You… you grabbed her right hand. You twisted it really hard to the outside. I heard a loud popping sound.”
Caroline raised one eyebrow and looked back at Dr. Cromwell.
“Doctor,” Caroline said calmly, directing her question to his professional expertise. “You’re the medical director here. Doesn’t that sling look a bit unusual for the injury Tammy described?”
Dr. Cromwell’s eyes narrowed. He leaned forward, his gaze turning clinical as he scrutinized the white bandage. His brow furrowed. “Wait a minute.” He stood up and took a step closer, ignoring Melanie’s whimper. “That’s a shoulder immobilization wrap. It’s used for a dislocation or clavicle fracture.” He turned his sharp gaze back to Tammy. “You said her wrist was twisted. That sling would do absolutely nothing for a radial injury.”
The medical contradiction was glaringly obvious. His thick eyebrows pulled together in deep suspicion.
Melanie started sweating. Drops of moisture formed on her forehead. “The doctor at the clinic tied it! I don’t know medical stuff!”
Caroline didn’t let her breathe. She immediately fired her next question at Tammy.
“Was anyone else in the break room with us, Tammy?” Caroline demanded.
“No!” Tammy yelled defensively. “It was just us three! You attacked her for no reason!”
Caroline smiled. It was a terrifying, victorious smile. She pointed down at her own right leg.
“If it was just us three,” Caroline said loudly, “then who threw the hot coffee on me?”
Dr. Cromwell leaned over his desk and looked down. A massive, dark coffee stain covered the entire front of Caroline’s blue scrub pants.
“Melanie threw hot coffee on me,” Caroline stated, her voice ringing with absolute authority. “I executed a standard self-defense restraint to stop her from burning my face. That is the truth.”
The entire narrative in the room flipped upside down in three seconds.
Melanie lost her mind. The panic completely destroyed her logic. She jumped up from her chair.
