Chapter 101:
She closed her eyes. She assumed the SUV was heading toward the massive iron gates of the Romero estate in Georgetown. She mentally prepared herself for the vicious, toxic environment of his family.
The car cabin was completely silent. Jarrod didn’t ask her what happened at the hospital. He didn’t care about the petty drama of nurses.
He reached across the center console. His large, warm hand wrapped completely around her cold fingers. He pulled her hand onto his thigh and gently rubbed his thumb across her knuckles.
The physical contact was incredibly grounding. The heat from his skin seeped into her freezing fingers, slowly melting the tension in her shoulders.

Ten minutes passed. The SUV began to slow down.
Caroline felt the slight shift in momentum. She opened her eyes and looked out the tinted window.
Her brow furrowed in deep confusion. They were not in the quiet, historic streets of Georgetown. Outside the window were massive, towering skyscrapers made of steel and glass. They were in the absolute center of Washington’s commercial financial district.
Caroline sat up straight. She pulled her hand out of his grip.
“Where are we?” Caroline asked, her voice tight with suspicion. “I thought we were going to the estate to prepare for the gala.”
Jarrod looked at her. His gray eyes were dark and completely unreadable.
“The gala starts at eight,” Jarrod said smoothly. “We have two hours to handle a private matter.”
The armored SUV pulled up to the curb in front of a massive, ultra-luxury commercial real estate building. The gold logo of the city’s top property management firm gleamed above the glass doors.
K.C. Bell opened the door. Jarrod stepped out onto the pavement, then turned and held his hand out to her.
Caroline stared at his hand. A cold knot of dread formed in her stomach. She slowly placed her hand in his and stepped out of the car.
“What are we doing here, Jarrod?” she demanded. “Are you buying an office building before a party?”
Jarrod didn’t answer. He gripped her hand tightly and pulled her through the revolving glass doors.
The massive marble lobby was nearly deserted. The moment Jarrod walked in, the senior building manager emerged from a side office and ran forward, bowing his head in absolute submission.
“Colonel Romero, sir,” the manager said nervously. “Right this way. The VIP elevator is holding for you.”
They stepped into the glass elevator. It shot upward at a terrifying speed. Caroline’s stomach dropped. She gripped Jarrod’s bicep to steady herself.
The doors slid open on the top floor. They walked into a massive, panoramic conference room. The entire wall was made of floor-to-ceiling glass, overlooking the sprawling city below.
A man in a custom-tailored suit was standing nervously next to a long mahogany table. On the table sat a massive stack of thick legal documents.
“Everything is prepared exactly to your specifications, Colonel,” the real estate broker said, wiping sweat from his forehead.
Jarrod pulled Caroline toward the table. He picked up the heavy stack of papers and flipped directly to the very last page.
