Chapter 110:
He turned around and walked out. The heavy wooden door clicked shut behind him.
The oppressive, terrifying aura of his protection vanished with him. Caroline was completely alone in the silent parlor.
She let out a long, shaky breath and walked over to the mahogany table. Her stomach suddenly let out a loud, painful cramp.
With the day’s absolute chaos, she suddenly realized she had skipped both lunch and dinner. Her blood sugar was crashing. If she was going to face a room full of hostile billionaires, she needed physical fuel.
She picked up a delicate bone china plate and used a pair of silver tongs to grab two small macarons and a piece of salmon tartare on a crostini.

She carried the plate to the darkest corner of the room, sat down on a single velvet armchair hidden in the shadows, and quickly took a bite of the salmon.
Just as she swallowed the food, the brass handle on the heavy wooden door slowly turned.
The door pushed open. A slice of bright light from the hallway cut across the dark carpet. A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped into the room, completely shattering her isolation.
Caroline froze in the velvet armchair. She kept her body perfectly still, her fingers gripping the edge of the bone china plate. Her gray eyes locked onto the man entering the room.
He was wearing a perfectly tailored, deep navy-blue suit. A pair of thin gold-rimmed glasses rested on the bridge of his nose. He radiated the sharp, exhausted energy of a high-powered Washington defense attorney.
He didn’t see her in the shadows. He let out a heavy, frustrated sigh and reached up to loosen his silk tie. He walked straight toward the mahogany table to pour himself a glass of sparkling water.
As he reached for the crystal decanter, his peripheral vision caught the shimmer of midnight-blue velvet in the corner.
The man stopped dead. He turned his head and squinted into the dim light.
When his eyes finally focused on Caroline’s face, his jaw literally dropped.
“Caroline?” the man blurted out, his voice cracking with absolute shock. “Is that really you? What in God’s name are you doing here?”
Caroline let out a quiet breath of relief. Her tense muscles relaxed. It wasn’t a Romero family assassin. It was Alston Petersen, the brilliant defense attorney and the fiancé of Amy Vazquez, an investigative journalist she’d met during a chaotic hospital press event a few months back.
Caroline set the plate down on the side table and stood up, pulling Jarrod’s massive overcoat tighter around her shoulders. A genuine, albeit awkward, smile touched her lips.
“Hello, Alston,” Caroline said softly.
Alston quickly closed the distance between them. His eyes widened as they swept over her appearance. He took in the flawless makeup, the terrifyingly expensive stilettos, and the heavy military overcoat swallowing her frame.
