Chapter 120:
General Augustus slowly leaned forward. He pressed the burning cherry of his cigar into the crystal ashtray. The heavy clack of the glass instantly silenced the whispering crowd.
The General grabbed his heavy ebony cane. He pushed himself up from the sofa. He took two slow steps toward Caroline. He towered over her, radiating the terrifying authority of a man who had ordered thousands of men to their deaths.
“Tell me, young woman,” the General said. His voice was a raspy, grating growl that scraped against the eardrums. “What exact methods of seduction did you use to blind my grandson and trick him into a secret registry?”
It was a brutal, public assassination of her character. He wanted her to cry. He wanted her to break.
Jarrod’s jaw locked. He opened his mouth to unleash hell on his grandfather.
But Caroline moved her thumb. She pressed it firmly against the back of Jarrod’s hand, a silent, tactical signal. Stand down. I have this.
Caroline didn’t flinch. She looked directly into the General’s terrifying eyes. She smiled. It was a cold, perfectly polite smile.
“General Romero,” Caroline replied.
Her voice rang out clear and crisp. She deliberately dropped her normal tone and adopted a flawless, highly educated Mid-Atlantic accent—the exact cadence of the old-money elite.
“I assure you, no trickery was required,” Caroline stated, her logic razor-sharp. “Your grandson utilized his overwhelming charm and absolute, terrifying determination to convince me to accept his proposal.”

She paused for exactly one second, letting the crowd hang on her words.
“After all,” Caroline added, her eyes flashing with dangerous intelligence, “as a highly decorated military commander, the Colonel is known for being incredibly decisive when he locks onto a target. Are you suggesting his judgment is flawed?”
The entire hall sucked in a breath.
It was a flawless verbal parry. She had defended her honor, complimented Jarrod’s masculinity, and trapped the General in a logical corner where insulting her meant insulting his own grandson’s military competence.
The General’s thick white eyebrows twitched. A flash of genuine, shocked respect flickered deep in his ancient eyes. He realized instantly that the woman standing before him was not a fragile piece of glass. She was forged steel.
The General stared at Caroline. The silence stretched for ten agonizing seconds. The tension in the air was so thick it felt like a physical weight pressing down on the crowd.
Just as the General opened his mouth to reply, a hysterical scream shattered the quiet.
“Don’t listen to her, Grandpa!”
Harper Romero shoved her way through the crowd of stunned guests. Her face was streaked with ruined mascara. She pointed a shaking, manic finger directly at Caroline’s face.
“She is a liar!” Harper shrieked, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. “She isn’t some high-society intellectual! She is a bottom-tier intern nurse at a public hospital! She is a gold-digging whore who spread her legs to steal our family money!”
The crowd gasped. The wealthy elites immediately began to whisper, their eyes turning from shocked respect to absolute, vicious disgust.
Jarrod’s sanity completely snapped.
