Chapter 127:
“Use private contractors,” the General ordered. “Find someone completely untraceable. Ex-intelligence operatives who know how to dig up corpses without disturbing the dirt.”
Finch paused for a second. “I will contact the director of Spectre Advisory, sir. They handle off-the-books extractions and deep-dive reconnaissance for the private sector.”
The General gave a sharp nod of approval.
“If they find a single discrepancy,” the General warned, his voice turning to ice, “a single gap in her history, you bring it directly to me. No one else in this house is to know.”
“And if her background proves to be completely clean, sir?” Finch asked cautiously.
The General stared into the flames. A cruel, cynical smile twisted his lips.
“No one is completely clean, Finch,” the General whispered. “If you dig deep enough, you will always find the rot they are trying to hide.”

The General waved his hand, dismissing the butler. Finch bowed perfectly and backed out of the room, closing the heavy door with a soft click.
The armored SUV rolled smoothly through the freezing Washington night. The heavy, bulletproof glass completely isolated the cabin from the outside world. The only sound was the low, powerful hum of the engine and the soft rush of the climate control.
Caroline kept her shoulder pressed against the cold glass of the window. Her mind was spinning violently, calculating the exact timeline of how long it would take a private intelligence firm to hit her CIA-redacted past.
Jarrod sat beside her. He wasn’t looking out the window. His head was turned, his sharp gray eyes locked entirely on the deep crease forming between her eyebrows.
He reached out. His long fingers tapped once against the leather armrest, breaking the silence.
“You are thinking about the old man’s signal to Finch,” Jarrod stated. His voice was low, calm, and completely devoid of panic.
Caroline turned her head. She didn’t bother denying it. She gave a short, tense nod.
“He is going to tear my life apart,” Caroline said, her voice tight. “He won’t stop until he finds a reason to destroy me.”
Jarrod let out a soft, dismissive scoff. He leaned his broad shoulders back against the leather seat.
“The General is a paranoid relic,” Jarrod said smoothly. “He can dig all he wants, but a nurse’s life is simple. What could he possibly find? Whatever baseless suspicion he invents, I will personally crush it. Trust me.”
Caroline’s stomach tightened. “And what if he finds something that isn’t simple?”
Jarrod’s eyes darkened slightly. A slow, incredibly knowing smile touched the corners of his mouth.
“Then I will crush that too,” Jarrod said, his voice dropping an octave. “My grandfather thinks this is about your past. It is not. It is about his control. He is testing my resolve. He will find nothing because I will not allow him to find anything.”
He paused. His gaze dragged down to her lips, then back up to her eyes.
