Chapter 130:
He lowered his head until his nose brushed against hers.
“I know,” Jarrod murmured, his breath hot against her lips. “I am not going to force you into my bed tonight, Caroline. I just need you behind my locked doors. I need to know the woman who just fought for my name is safe.”
The soft, unexpected promise of safety broke the last of her resistance. Caroline let out a shaky breath, her tense muscles finally relaxing against his body.
But the second she surrendered, Jarrod moved.
He didn’t give her time to process the relief. He tilted his head and crushed his mouth directly onto hers.

It wasn’t a violent, punishing kiss like the ones before. It was a deep, slow, agonizingly thorough claiming. His lips parted hers with absolute authority. His tongue swept into her mouth, tasting her, consuming her, branding her with a heat that made her vision blur.
Caroline let out a soft, helpless whimper. Her hands, which had been pushing against his chest, slowly curled into the expensive fabric of his jacket. She held onto him like a drowning woman clinging to a raft.
The kiss lasted for minutes, drowning out the world, the assassins, and the lies. When Jarrod finally pulled back, Caroline was gasping for air, her head resting weakly against his shoulder, completely at the mercy of the man carrying her into his fortress.
The armored SUV descended into the subterranean parking garage of a massive, ultra-luxury high-rise in the center of downtown Washington. The vehicle rolled to a smooth stop directly in front of a private, stainless-steel elevator bank.
Before the engine even cut off, a heavily armed private security guard stepped forward and pulled the heavy rear door open. The guard kept his eyes strictly on the concrete floor, refusing to look inside the cabin.
Jarrod stepped out first. His massive frame blocked the harsh fluorescent light of the garage. He turned around and held his large hand out to Caroline.
Caroline stared at his palm. Her lips were still swollen and tingling from the devastating kiss in the car. Her brain felt sluggish, heavily sedated by the adrenaline and the overwhelming physical dominance he projected.
She placed her hand in his.
Jarrod pulled her gently out of the SUV. Her diamond-encrusted stilettos hit the polished concrete with a sharp, echoing click.
He didn’t let go of her hand. He led her directly into the private elevator. He pulled a black keycard from his pocket, swiped it over the scanner, and hit the single button for the penthouse.
The heavy steel doors slid shut. The elevator shot upward with terrifying speed.
Caroline watched the digital floor numbers climbing rapidly on the display screen. Forty. Forty-five. Fifty. With every floor they passed, the reality of her situation crashed down on her. She was being taken to his absolute territory. There were no roommates, no public lobbies, no escape routes.
