Chapter 203:
Harper didn’t bother knocking. She shoved the heavy door open and walked into the office.
Dr. Finchley was sitting behind his desk, rubbing his temples as he reviewed a stack of budget reports. He jumped in his chair as the door slammed against the wall.
He looked up and saw a woman radiating pure, expensive hostility standing in his office.
Harper walked to the desk and slammed her heavy Birkin bag down onto the polished wood.
“I am Harper Romero,” she announced coldly.
Finchley’s expression immediately hardened into a mask of professional caution. He set his pen down, his posture straightening. The annoyance vanished from his face, replaced by a heavy, calculating wariness. He knew exactly who the Romeros were — and he knew something far more dangerous. Caroline Thompson had evidence that could bury this hospital. And this woman standing in front of him had no idea what kind of hornet’s nest she was about to kick.
He stood up slowly, offering a polite but guarded nod. “Miss Romero,” Finchley said, his tone carefully neutral. “Please, have a seat. What brings you to my office today?”
Harper pulled out a leather chair and sat down, crossing her legs, leaning back to look at the doctor with absolute superiority.
“I want you to fire Caroline Thompson,” Harper demanded. “Immediately.”

Finchley blinked. He didn’t drop his pen. He set it down deliberately, his mind racing. A cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
“Miss Romero,” Finchley replied, his voice tight but controlled, “Caroline is one of our best nurses. And she just survived a formal HR inquiry. I cannot legally terminate her without severe, documented cause. The union would sue the hospital into the ground.”
Harper let out a sharp, mocking laugh. She leaned forward, placing both hands flat on the desk, her eyes venomous.
“I don’t care about your union,” Harper hissed. “If Caroline Thompson is still employed at this hospital by Monday morning, I will personally ensure that every regulatory agency in this state descends on your facility. I may not control the family foundation, Doctor, but I sit on enough charitable boards to make your life a living hell. One phone call to the medical licensing board, and your accreditation review gets fast-tracked. Another to the press, and your hospital’s little drug-diversion problem becomes front-page news.”
The threat hit the room like a bomb.
Finchley’s stomach violently dropped. She didn’t know. She couldn’t know about the fentanyl — that secret was buried too deep. But the coincidence was catastrophic. If Harper started making noise, if she launched even a superficial investigation into the hospital’s practices, the audit would eventually lead to the very thing Caroline had threatened to expose. Harper wasn’t holding a gun to his department. She was holding a match to a powder keg she didn’t even know existed.
