Chapter 220:
Finch pressed his finger against his hidden earpiece. “Finch. Go ahead.”
“Sir, this is perimeter actual,” a voice crackled over the encrypted radio channel. “We have a situation at the target’s Alexandria residence — the parents’ house. Two unidentified vehicles with obscured plates just did a slow roll past the building. Three individuals exited and are currently attempting to breach the rear alley access point.”
Finch’s blood ran cold. Cleaners. Someone had hired a hit squad. And they had gone to the Thompson house first — which meant they knew about her family. If they didn’t find her there, they would start working through every address tied to her name.
Finch knew Jarrod’s downtown penthouse was a fortress. K.C. Bell was stationed there now, maintaining the security net on strict orders. But the penthouse was also the most predictable destination. If the cleaners had already compromised Caroline’s family address, it was only a matter of time before they moved on the penthouse. And a firefight in a civilian high-rise — even one Bell could win — would draw exactly the kind of public attention Jarrod had spent months avoiding.
Finch made a split-second, tactical decision. His loyalty was to the Romero family, and the General had just explicitly ordered him to keep this woman safe. The Romero estate was a fortified military compound with twenty-four-hour armed patrols. It was the last place anyone would expect her to be taken.
“Driver,” Finch commanded sharply. “Abort the route. Turn the vehicle around. We are returning to the estate immediately. Priority one.”
The driver didn’t ask questions. He whipped the massive steering wheel, executing a hard, illegal U-turn in the middle of the empty bridge, and accelerated back toward Georgetown.
Twenty minutes later, the Phantom bypassed the main gates and slipped through the heavily fortified, hidden side entrance of the Romero estate. The car pulled into the underground security garage and parked.
Caroline was so deeply exhausted she didn’t even stir when the engine cut off.

Finch got out of the car and opened the rear door. The freezing garage air rushed in, but Caroline didn’t wake. Finch did not attempt to shake her. He leaned into the cabin, slid one arm under her knees and the other behind her back, and lifted her out of the car.
Finch was a former SAS operative. He carried her weight effortlessly. He bypassed the main house completely, taking the secure, biometric-locked private elevator directly to the third floor.
The third floor was Jarrod’s absolute, private domain. Finch knew he was violating the Colonel’s most sacred rule, but the General’s order was absolute: keep her safe. And the master suite, with its reinforced doors and independent security system, was the most secure room in the entire estate. It was a calculated risk he was willing to take. No one entered without his permission.
Finch carried Caroline down the dark, silent hallway. He pushed open the door to Jarrod’s master bedroom — a massive, cold space decorated in stark blacks and grays.
