Chapter 228:
Jarrod let out a dark, mocking laugh. He lowered his arm and turned his head to look at her. His eyes were cold and lethal.
“A courtesy?” Jarrod sneered. “My men reported every interaction. Every time he looked at you. Every time he got too close. That doctor is a threat, and he doesn’t even know how close he came to being eliminated.”
Caroline’s breath caught. The realization of how close Julian had come to danger simply for handing her a pastry made her stomach turn to ice. She had known Jarrod was watching. She hadn’t known he was this close to acting.
Jarrod didn’t wait for her to process it. He reached out his left arm, grabbed her by the waist, and effortlessly dragged her across the mattress until she was pressed flush against his side.
He wrapped his heavy arm around her, pinning her to his chest. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling her scent deeply.
“Every inch of you has my name burned into it,” Jarrod whispered against her scalp, his voice vibrating with terrifying possessiveness. “If any man looks at you, I will blind him. If any man touches you, I will kill him. You are mine.”
The words were suffocating. They were the chains of a gilded cage snapping shut around her.
But as Caroline lay pinned against his chest, listening to the frantic, erratic pounding of his heart, she realized something profound. His threats weren’t born of arrogance. They were born of absolute, paralyzing fear. He was a dragon hoarding gold because he was terrified of being empty.
Caroline didn’t fight him. She didn’t argue. She slowly relaxed her muscles, letting her head rest against his collarbone, surrendering to the heavy, dangerous weight of his embrace as the exhaustion finally claimed them both.

Caroline woke up slowly.
The heavy blackout curtains were not perfectly sealed. A single, brilliant shaft of morning sunlight pierced the gap, cutting across the dark carpet and illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.
She tried to stretch her legs, but she couldn’t move.
A heavy, suffocating weight was pressing down on her entire body. She blinked, her vision clearing, and realized she was trapped in a human vice.
Jarrod was asleep, but his body had unconsciously locked her into a defensive, tactical hold. One of his heavy, muscular legs was thrown completely over both of hers, pinning her to the mattress. His thick arm was wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her back flush against his chest. Even in deep sleep, his subconscious was executing a physical protocol to ensure his asset could not escape.
Caroline frowned, feeling a flare of irritation. She wiggled her shoulders, trying to create an inch of breathing room.
As she moved, the friction against her skin felt wrong.
She looked down at her chest. Her eyes widened.
