Chapter 243:
He grabbed Caroline’s shoulders with his left hand and shoved her back against the leather seat. Before she could gasp, his mouth crashed down onto hers.
It was a brutal, punishing kiss, driven by pure, unadulterated jealousy and a desperate need to assert his ownership.
His tongue swept past her lips, stealing her breath. His heavy body pressed her deep into the leather, trapping her completely.
Caroline pushed her hands against his rock-hard chest, making a muffled sound of protest.
Jarrod didn’t stop. He grabbed both of her wrists with his left hand, pinning them above her head. His right arm remained braced motionless against the seatback as he shifted his weight.

He released her wrists, and his left hand dropped to the collar of her pristine white silk shirt. He grabbed the fabric and pulled.
The first three buttons popped off with a sharp tearing sound, flying into the shadows of the tinted cabin.
Jarrod buried his face in the exposed skin of her neck. He pressed his mouth gently against her collarbone, his rough thumb pressing hard against her racing pulse.
Caroline’s head fell back against the seat. Her resistance melted under the overwhelming, suffocating heat of his body. She was drowning in him.
After five agonizing minutes, Jarrod finally pulled back. His chest heaved. His black eyes burned into hers.
“Don’t smile at him,” Jarrod rasped, his voice shaking with dark obsession. “Don’t smile at anyone. You look at me.”
Caroline stared at the feral intensity in his eyes, her heart pounding frantically.
Thirty minutes later, the SUV screeched to a halt in the underground garage of the penthouse.
Jarrod kicked the door open. Caroline’s legs were shaking so badly from the adrenaline and the lack of oxygen that she couldn’t stand.
Jarrod didn’t hesitate. He leaned in, slid his left arm around her back, and pulled her tightly against his side. She leaned heavily on him, his right arm still motionless, as he guided her toward the private elevator, taking her back to his fortress.
The morning sun blasted through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, striking Caroline directly in the eyes.
She groaned, throwing her arm over her face. Her entire body ached. Her muscles felt bruised from the exhausting struggle in the SUV earlier that morning.
She rolled over on the dark gray silk sheets, reaching blindly for the nightstand.
Her fingers found her phone. She pressed the screen.
It was 10:15 a.m.
Caroline’s heart stopped. She shot up in bed, the silk sheets falling to her waist.
She had a critical evaluation shift at the hospital that started at 8:00 a.m. Missing it meant automatic termination.
She stared at the screen. There were three missed calls from the hospital’s automated scheduling system. Her alarm hadn’t gone off.
Jarrod had turned it off. He had left for the Pentagon and deliberately sabotaged her job to keep her locked in this apartment.
A wave of hot, helpless anger washed over her. She threw the covers off and ran out of the bedroom, but the massive penthouse was completely empty.
