Chapter 265:
“I saved a woman’s life!” Caroline yelled back, her chest heaving. “I handled them perfectly! I don’t need you acting like a lunatic and blowing up the entire street to protect me!”
She pointed toward the alley.
“Alston had the situation completely defused,” Caroline mocked. “If you hadn’t lost your mind over him touching me, no one would be bleeding right now!”
Jarrod’s eyes narrowed into lethal slits.
He lunged forward. His left arm shot out, grabbed her waist, and shoved her backward until her spine hit the cold brick wall of the building.
He planted his left hand on the bricks right next to her ear, trapping her. His right arm remained pressed motionless against his side.
“Defused?” Jarrod hissed, his face inches from hers. “You think Alston’s little mafia act was going to hold?”
Jarrod leaned in closer. The smell of gunpowder was suffocating.
“The basement of that VIP lounge you were drinking in is the Gallo family’s central money-laundering hub,” Jarrod revealed, his voice a cold, brutal weapon. “My team just slaughtered twenty armed cartel guards down there. Rocco’s radio was going to buzz in exactly two minutes. When he found out his boss was dead, he would have cut your throat just for being in the street.”
Caroline’s eyes widened. Her breath caught in her throat.
She stared at him, the horrifying reality crashing down on her.

She hadn’t just run into a random mugging. She had accidentally walked directly into the perimeter of a highly classified, lethal military raid. She had walked right into his kill zone.
A heavy wave of guilt and delayed terror washed over her.
But she refused to give him the satisfaction of breaking her. She locked her jaw.
She turned her head, refusing to look at his intense, burning eyes.
“Fine. Your mission is over,” Caroline said coldly. She bent down and snatched her dirty leather jacket off the ground. “I’m going back to the apartment.”
She tried to duck under his arm to walk away.
Jarrod’s left arm snapped down like a steel bar.
He wrapped his thick arm around her waist. He didn’t pull her. He simply lifted her straight up into the air.
Caroline gasped as her feet left the ground.
“Put me down!” Caroline screamed, her composure shattering.
She kicked her legs wildly. She slammed her fists against his solid, Kevlar-covered shoulder.
“You controlling psychopath, let me go!” she yelled, hoping the operators would intervene.
The twelve heavily armed soldiers stood in a perfect perimeter. They all faced outward. Not a single man turned his head. They were completely deaf to their commander’s domestic war.
Jarrod ignored her fists.
He hoisted her up, threw her over his broad left shoulder like a sack of captured loot, bracing her weight against his chest as his right arm hung motionless, and marched heavily toward the idling armored SUV.
Jarrod reached the center armored SUV.
He grabbed the heavy steel handle and ripped the bulletproof door open with one hand.
He didn’t set Caroline down gently. He tossed her inside.
