Chapter 271:
“I just wanted one place,” Caroline confessed softly. “Just one tiny corner of my life where I was judged solely on my own merits. I wanted to be Nurse Thompson, the girl who saves lives. Not Mrs. Romero, a prisoner on a throne expected to be a trophy rather than someone fighting on the front lines of life and death in a terrifying military dynasty.”
Jarrod listened in silence.
The rigid tension in his broad shoulders slowly began to thaw. The sheer logic and raw pain in her words hit him directly in the chest.
He realized, for the very first time, that her secrecy wasn’t about keeping her options open for other men. It was about preserving her basic human dignity.
The lethal anger in his black eyes faded, replaced by a complex storm of guilt, understanding, and a deeply rooted insecurity he rarely showed to anyone.
Jarrod slowly lifted his left hand. His rough thumb gently wiped away a stray tear that had escaped the corner of her eye.
He stepped closer. His massive frame was no longer a cage, but a solid wall offering protection. He rested his forehead against hers, letting out a ragged, heavy sigh.
“I thought you were hiding the marriage because you were ashamed of me,” Jarrod admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
Caroline’s breath hitched. She was completely shocked.
“I forced you into this arrangement with threats and military power,” Jarrod confessed, exposing a vulnerability so raw it physically hurt to hear. “I thought you would never truly give me your heart. I thought you were waiting for a chance to run to someone normal. Someone like Croft.”
The invincible, ruthless Colonel Romero was standing in front of her, exposing his deepest fears.

Caroline reached up. Her small hands tentatively rested on his broad shoulders. It was a silent gesture of comfort that she initiated voluntarily.
Jarrod’s left hand slid down to her waist. His right arm remained still at his side as he pulled her flush against him again, but this time with a desperate gentleness rather than violent force.
He looked deep into her gray eyes. He set a new boundary, his tone serious but devoid of the previous tyranny.
“I will let you keep the secret at the hospital for now,” Jarrod agreed, respecting her need for professional independence. “But in exchange, I demand absolute transparency regarding Julian Croft.”
He traced her lower lip with his thumb, his touch feather-light as it brushed over the tender spot he had bruised earlier.
“My patience for other men circling my wife is zero,” Jarrod warned.
Caroline nodded slowly, accepting the compromise.
“Julian is strictly a mentor,” Caroline promised. “I will maintain a rigid professional distance.”
Jarrod’s gaze dropped to her mouth. The possessive alpha instinct inside him was satisfied by her verbal submission.
“If Croft crosses the line even once,” Jarrod murmured, his voice dark and serious, “I won’t care about your hospital politics. I will personally ensure the man’s career is over.”
Caroline shivered. She knew he was absolutely serious. But strangely, she also felt a twisted sense of security in his ferocious protection.
The heavy, combative atmosphere in the kitchen finally dissipated, rapidly replaced by a thick, magnetic sexual tension that pulled them closer.
