Chapter 299:
The elevator doors opened. They stepped out into the freezing, brightly lit corridor of the hospital morgue. The air smelled strongly of industrial bleach and cold metal.
Caroline walked straight to the main viewing room. She pushed open the heavy metal door without a single moment of hesitation.
Mrs. Thompson lay on a stainless steel table in the center of the room. Her skin was a pale, waxy gray. Her face and chest were still covered in dried blood and dark yellow surgical iodine.
Julian stayed by the door. He kept his weight balanced on the balls of his feet, ready to catch her. He anticipated a massive, delayed emotional collapse the second she saw the brutal reality of the body.
Instead, Caroline walked past the table. Her face remained completely expressionless. She moved toward a nearby medical supply cart against the wall.
She picked up a stainless steel basin. She walked to the deep sink and filled it with warm water. She grabbed a thick stack of clean white washcloths from the shelf.

She returned to the metal table. She dipped a washcloth into the warm water. She wrung it out with steady, unshakeable hands.
Caroline gently began to wipe the dried blood from her mother’s forehead. Her movements were methodical, tender, and incredibly precise.
She cleaned her cheeks. She wiped her chin. She carefully dabbed at the deep, jagged laceration near her temple, slowly washing away the violent evidence of the crash.
Julian watched from the doorway. A cold chill ran down his spine. The scene playing out in front of him was both deeply heartbreaking and profoundly unsettling.
He realized she was performing a ritualistic cleaning. She was completely detached from the reality of the death, treating the body like a tactical objective that needed to be secured and sanitized.
Caroline moved to her mother’s hands. She carefully cleaned the dark dirt and grease from under her fingernails, using the edge of the washcloth.
She continued her work in absolute silence, her focus total, as if preparing a sacred vessel for a final inspection. Each movement was precise, detached, and utterly devoid of personal grief, which made the act of tenderness all the more chilling to witness.
Julian stepped forward. He couldn’t watch this unnatural display any longer. He gently touched her shoulder, whispering her name to snap her out of the deep dissociative state.
Caroline stopped moving instantly. She turned her head slowly. She looked at Julian with eyes that were completely hollow, dark, and empty.
She told him, in a chillingly calm voice, that her mother hated being messy. She stated as a matter of fact that she had to fix it before anyone else saw her.
She turned back to the table. She tossed the blood-soaked washcloth into a red biohazard bin with a wet slap. She grabbed a fresh, clean cloth from the stack.
She continued the meticulous cleaning for another twenty minutes. She didn’t stop until her mother’s face and hands were completely pristine and free of blood.
