Chapter 313:
Hayes angrily reprimanded Riley. His voice boomed over the rhythmic hum of the medical monitors. He ordered the corporal to stand down and move aside immediately.
Riley refused to move an inch. He argued vehemently, his voice cracking slightly. He stated that the civilian was delirious and freezing to death, not a hostile combatant.
K.C. cleared his throat loudly. The sharp, authoritative sound instantly froze the argument between the two soldiers.
Hayes and Riley snapped to attention. They immediately recognized the Colonel’s formidable right-hand operative.
K.C. stepped further into the room. His cold eyes swept over the spilled liquid medication pooling on the white tile floor.

He demanded a crisp, immediate status report regarding the security anomaly brought through the perimeter.
Hayes swallowed hard. He reported that they found an unidentified, unarmed female civilian collapsed in the mud near Sector 4.
Hayes added the crucial detail. He stated that she was clutching a military-grade encrypted satellite phone, which triggered the Level One alert and flagged her as a potential spy.
K.C.’s expression hardened instantly at the mention of the encrypted phone. His mind ran rapidly through active security protocols and compromised communication lines.
He ordered Riley to step aside. He needed to visually confirm the identity of the civilian huddled on the gurney.
Riley hesitated for a fraction of a second. He cast a protective glance backward at the bed before stepping slowly to the left.
K.C.’s line of sight was finally cleared. His gaze landed on the small figure huddled defensively on the hospital mattress.
Caroline was curled into a tight combat crouch. Her hospital scrubs were torn at the knees and heavily stained with dark, wet mountain mud.
Her wet, matted hair fell across her face in thick clumps. It completely obscured her features from K.C.’s immediate recognition.
She glared at K.C. through the wet strands. Her eyes were glazed with a dangerous, fever-induced delirium.
She let out a low, warning hiss. Her muscles were rigidly coiled under her wet clothes, ready to strike anyone who approached her perimeter.
K.C. took a slow, measured step forward. He was highly trained to handle hostile interrogations with extreme caution.
He ordered Dr. Reed to prepare a stronger sedative. He mentally calculated the physical force that would be needed to restrain the intruder without killing her.
As K.C. moved closer, the harsh overhead surgical lights shifted. The bright beam illuminated the distinct, bruised curve of her jawline.
Caroline shifted her weight backward. Her matted hair parted just enough to reveal her pale, terrified face completely to the light.
K.C. stopped dead in his tracks. His breath caught sharply in his throat. His brain struggled violently to process the impossible visual data in front of him.
The digital datapad slipped from his suddenly numb fingers. It clattered loudly onto the tile floor as sheer, unadulterated panic set in.
The loud clatter of the datapad echoed sharply in the silent trauma room. The noise drew bewildered stares from Hayes and Riley.
Dr. Reed frowned deeply. She picked up a fresh syringe from the metal tray. She asked K.C. if she should proceed with the chemical restraint.
