Chapter 320:
Jarrod shifted his weight and leaned back against the headboard, pulling her entirely on top of him to maximize contact, carefully positioning her weight against his chest to avoid jarring his shattered right shoulder.
He whispered fiercely against her ear, “I have you. I will never let you fall.”
He added, with terrifying conviction, “Anyone who tries to hurt your family again will be wiped off the face of the earth.”
The sheer, predatory violence in his promise acted as a bizarre but highly effective balm to her terrified mind.

Her violent sobbing slowly gave way to exhausted, rhythmic hiccups as her adrenaline finally burned out.
Jarrod kept his functional left arm locked securely around her waist, his chest and immobilized right shoulder serving as an immovable fortress.
He realized the depth of her trauma and silently cursed himself for not putting a full security detail on her parents sooner.
Caroline rested her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady, powerful thud of his heartbeat beneath his ribs.
The heartbeat served as a physical metronome, slowly regulating her own erratic breathing back to a normal rhythm.
“I’m completely alone now,” she whispered weakly, her voice hoarse and broken from crying.
The grip of his left arm tightened painfully. With his left hand, he gently tilted her chin up, forcing her red, swollen eyes to meet his intense, dark gaze, while keeping his injured arm completely still.
“You’re my wife,” he told her, with absolute, uncompromising authority. “You will never be alone for the rest of your life.”
He pressed a fierce, branding kiss to her forehead, sealing the vow of ultimate protection onto her skin.
Caroline closed her eyes and sank completely into his dominance, finding the only safe harbor left in her ruined world.
The emotional storm had passed, leaving a heavy but peaceful silence in the dimly lit officer’s quarters.
Caroline lay limply against Jarrod’s chest, her breathing finally steady, her eyes half-closed in sheer exhaustion.
Jarrod gently untangled himself from her desperate grip using his left arm, shifting her weight with practiced care to ensure her torso was safely supported as she sat up against the wooden headboard, while his injured right arm remained pinned at his side.
He turned to the nightstand and picked up the metal tray the aide had left hours ago.
The bowl of oatmeal was completely cold and congealed, looking incredibly unappetizing under the harsh room light.
Jarrod grabbed a metal spoon with his functional left hand, scooped up a small amount of the cold oatmeal, and held it directly in front of Caroline’s mouth.
“Eat it,” he ordered, in a tone that brooked absolutely no argument. “Your blood sugar is dangerously low.”
Caroline wrinkled her nose and turned her head away, her grief-stricken stomach still violently rejecting the very idea of food.
“I’m not hungry,” she whispered. “Just put the bowl down and hold me again.”
Jarrod’s expression hardened. He knew that skipping meals after a severe fever and massive trauma was medically dangerous.
He set the spoon back into the bowl with a sharp clink and leaned in much closer to her face.
