Chapter 342:
Caroline stared out the window, the familiar landscape of rolling hills and autumn trees a stark contrast to the turmoil in her heart. The impending separation made her feel desperate. The thought of him leaving with the ghost of Elena hanging between them was unbearable. The days of silent isolation in his quarters had only sharpened her anxiety, and now, facing his departure, she realized she could no longer carry it alone. She needed an answer. She needed it now.
She turned to Jarrod, her voice quiet but firm. “We need to talk.”
He met her gaze, his expression serious. He had been waiting for this.
Before she could speak, a snippet from the radio floated through the cabin, a celebrity news segment about a famous couple breaking up. The host’s cheerful voice was jarring. “Well, I guess good things must come to an end.”

The banal phrase hit Caroline like a stray bullet. Her anxiety spiked.
“Is that what we are?” she blurted out, the words tumbling from her lips before she could stop them. “A good thing that’s about to end?”
Jarrod’s eyes narrowed. He unbuckled his seatbelt and moved closer, his large frame crowding her against the door. He cupped her face in his left hand, his touch surprisingly gentle, forcing her to look at him. His right arm remained motionless at his side.
“There is no end for us, Caroline.”
She tried to pull away, the words she’d been holding back finally spilling out in a rush of insecurity and pain. The carefully constructed wall she had built around the photo crumbled. “But the woman, the one in the photograph in your desk…”
Before she could finish, he silenced her with a deep, soul-stealing kiss. It wasn’t violent like before. It was filled with a desperate, urgent passion that stole the air from her lungs and left her breathless.
He broke the kiss, resting his forehead against hers, his breathing ragged. He looked directly into her eyes, his voice a low, raw vow that vibrated through her entire being.
“You and me,” he said, his thumb stroking her cheek, wiping away a tear she didn’t know had fallen. “We’re till the end of the line.”
The phrase, a powerful declaration of ultimate loyalty, hit her with the force of a physical blow. It was more than “I love you.” It was a soldier’s promise, an oath of unwavering partnership until death. It was absolute.
All her doubts, all her fears about Elena, were momentarily obliterated by the sheer, terrifying intensity of his vow.
Tears welled up in her eyes, but this time they were of relief, not pain. She searched his face, seeing nothing but absolute, unwavering sincerity. She gave a shaky nod, accepting his promise, choosing to trust him in this moment.
He kissed her again, softly this time, sealing the vow.
Just then, the SUV slowed, pulling into the gravel driveway of her childhood home. The spell was broken by their arrival.
The house sat quiet and still, its windows dark. The porch swing where her mother used to sit on summer evenings hung empty, swaying slightly in the autumn breeze. A stack of unopened sympathy cards was visible through the glass of the front door, left on the hall table by a neighbor who had been keeping an eye on the place.
