Chapter 348:
Julian strode into the room, his eyes taking in the scene in a single, sweeping glance: Corbett on the floor, a mess of tears and smeared makeup; the aide gasping for breath on a bench; and Caroline, standing like the calm eye of a hurricane, her scrubs perfectly neat, her expression unreadable.
This was not the gentle, resilient nurse he had first met. But it was the woman he had glimpsed in the aftermath of her mother’s death: steely, controlled, and terrifyingly still. He had seen the ice behind her eyes before, and he understood now what he was looking at. This was not a breakdown. This was a woman pushed past her breaking point, fighting back the only way her shattered nerves would allow.
He looked at Caroline, his expression a mixture of shock, concern, and something deeper, a recognition that the quiet nurse he had once harbored feelings for was far more complex, and far more dangerous, than he had ever imagined.
Julian stepped cautiously toward Caroline, his hands raised in a placating gesture, the way one might approach a wounded, dangerous animal. His eyes darted from the heavy dent in the locker to Caroline’s cold, tactical stance, a flash of profound confusion and professional alarm piercing through his composure. “Caroline,” he said, his voice calm but firm, the voice of a doctor trying to de-escalate a situation that looked less like a locker-room scuffle and more like a calculated assault. “That’s enough.”
His voice seemed to break the spell. Caroline’s gaze shifted to him, and the cold fire in her eyes flickered. For a moment, a hint of the woman he knew returned.
Seeing her chance, Melanie scrambled to her feet, pointing a shaking, accusatory finger at Caroline.
“She assaulted me!” Melanie screeched, her voice raw with hysteria. “I’m pressing charges! I want her fired! I want her arrested!”
She looked wildly around the room, her eyes landing on the other nurses who had witnessed the entire event. “You all saw it!” she yelled, her voice cracking with desperation. “You’re all witnesses! Tell him what she did!”

A heavy, awkward silence descended on the locker room. The only sound was Melanie’s ragged breathing.
Julian turned to the assembled nurses, his expression neutral, professional, though his mind raced to rationalize the lethal precision Caroline had just displayed. “Did anyone see what happened?”
The first nurse he looked at, a veteran named Maria, suddenly became fascinated by a scuff mark on the floor. “I was tying my shoe, Doctor,” she said without looking up. “Didn’t see a thing.”
Another nurse, a younger woman Melanie often belittled for her weight, shrugged. “I was listening to my podcast. Had my earbuds in.”
One by one, every single nurse present offered a plausible, mundane excuse. They saw nothing. They heard nothing. They were adjusting their scrubs, checking their phones, rummaging in their lockers.
Melanie’s face contorted with rage and a dawning sense of betrayal. “You’re all lying!” she shrieked. “You were right here! You saw everything!”
Brenna stepped forward, her arms crossed over her chest. “All I saw, Melanie,” she said, her voice clear and steady, “was you verbally harassing a grieving colleague on her first day back after her mother’s funeral.”
