Chapter 349:
The collective stonewalling was a clear, unspoken verdict. They were all siding with Caroline.
Melanie realized with a sickening lurch of horror that her social power, built on fear and intimidation, had completely evaporated. No one feared her anymore.
She turned her fury on Julian. “This is your fault! You’ve always had a soft spot for this charity case!”
Caroline watched the scene unfold, a slow, cold smile touching her lips for the first time. It was a smile of grim satisfaction, seeing her tormentor utterly defeated not by her fists, but by a wall of silent solidarity.
Julian ignored Melanie’s accusation, his focus entirely on Caroline. Though the terrifying efficiency of her movements left a chilling question mark in his mind, his protective instincts as her colleague and friend took over. He gently took her arm. “Come on,” he said softly. “Let’s get you out of here.” His touch was gentle, protective. He began to lead her toward the door.
Melanie let out a frustrated scream, grabbing a nearby water bottle and hurling it at the lockers. The plastic bottle bounced off with a hollow, pathetic clatter, a perfect symbol of her impotence.
Julian didn’t even flinch. He continued to escort Caroline out of the room. As they passed Tammy, still sitting on the bench, Caroline met her gaze. Tammy looked away quickly, her face a mixture of fear and shame.

The door swung shut behind Julian and Caroline, leaving Melanie alone in a room full of silent accusers.
She glared at the other nurses, her eyes promising retribution.
But no one met her gaze. They simply turned their backs and went back to their lockers, effectively erasing her from their social space.
Julian led Caroline down the quiet hospital corridor, his hand a firm, reassuring presence on her arm, guiding her away from the toxic atmosphere of the locker room. He didn’t speak, just walked, creating a silent buffer between her and the chaos.
Behind them, Melanie’s fury found a new target. She stormed out of the locker room, her face blotchy and tear-streaked.
“You can’t just walk away!” she screamed at Julian’s retreating back. “You’re a doctor! You’re supposed to be impartial!”
Julian stopped, but he didn’t turn around. He spoke over his shoulder, his voice laced with an ice that was more chilling than any shout.
“I am being impartial, Ms. Thorne,” he said, his words delivered with clinical precision. “I’m removing a victim of severe harassment from her abuser.”
The public condemnation, delivered so calmly, was more devastating than any slap. He then continued walking, leaving Melanie standing alone in the hallway, utterly and completely humiliated. His loyalty was now crystal clear to anyone who might have been watching.
Back in the locker room, Tammy Riggs had watched the entire exchange through the cracked-open door. She saw the utter contempt in Dr. Croft’s voice. She saw the other nurses turning their backs. She saw Melanie, standing alone and powerless in the hallway.
