Chapter 361:
Julian shook his head. “I can’t say. But I think you know. Your husband’s people. They came to me. They told me you were under their protection, and that anyone who interfered would face consequences.” He let out a bitter laugh. “I’m a doctor, Caroline. I took an oath to help people. And I’m being threatened for trying to help a friend.”
The fear in his voice was real. Caroline could see it in the way his hands trembled, the way his eyes darted toward the door. He was genuinely terrified. And yet he was here, sitting beside her, risking everything.
“Why are you telling me this now?” she asked.
Julian took a deep breath. “Because you deserve to know. And because… I can’t just stand by and watch you suffer alone. But we have to be careful. There are eyes everywhere. If anyone sees us together—”
“I understand,” Caroline said, her voice softening. “And I appreciate the risk you’re taking. But you don’t have to put yourself in danger for me, Julian. I can handle this.”
He looked at her, his eyes filled with a desperate, aching concern. “Can you? Because from where I’m standing, you’re carrying the weight of the world alone. Your husband isn’t here. Your family is… complicated. And you’re trying to hold it all together by yourself.”
Caroline looked away. He wasn’t wrong. The isolation, the secrets, the impossible choices—it was crushing her. But she couldn’t let him see that. She couldn’t let anyone see that.
“I’ll be okay,” she said. “I always am.”

Julian reached out, his hand hovering just above hers, not quite touching. “If you ever need someone to talk to… someone who isn’t wrapped up in all of this… I’m here. That’s all I’m saying.”
Caroline nodded, not trusting her voice. After a moment, Julian stood and walked toward the door. He paused with his hand on the knob.
“Be careful, Caroline,” he said without turning around. “And whatever you do… don’t trust anyone. Not even the people who say they’re trying to help.”
Then he was gone, leaving her alone in the room with the unconscious man who had turned her world upside down.
Another week passed. Donovan remained in the hospital, drifting in and out of consciousness as his body struggled to recover from the surgery. Caroline visited him every day, sitting beside his bed, learning the rhythms of his breathing, the lines of his face.
She still didn’t know how she felt about him. She had stopped trying to figure it out. Instead, she focused on what she could control: the small acts of care—adjusting his pillows, reading to him from old newspapers, making sure the nurses were following his medication schedule. It was easier than confronting the tangled mess of her emotions.
Julian kept his distance, but Caroline caught glimpses of him in the hallways, always watching, always looking over his shoulder. The fear in his eyes hadn’t diminished. If anything, it had grown.
One evening, Caroline was sitting in the small family lounge at the end of the neuro wing, staring out the window at the rain streaking down the glass. The soft patter against the window was the only sound, a rhythmic backdrop to the endless loop of worry in her mind.
