Chapter 393:
He glanced down at her and gave her a small, reassuring smile that didn’t reach his eyes. The look was clear: I’ve got this.
The name, spoken aloud by a man in power, made it real. It was a shield. It was a weapon. And Jarrod had just handed it to her.
Dr. Finchley was sweating. Small beads of perspiration had popped up on his forehead and upper lip. He looked from Jarrod’s stony face to Caroline’s, his expression a desperate plea for mercy. His face had gone pale, his hands visibly trembling at his sides—a man who now saw clearly that he hadn’t just been dealing with a powerful benefactor, but that he had failed to protect a member of one of the most influential families in the country.
Jarrod ignored his panicked state. He got straight to the point. “Regarding the assault on my wife yesterday,” he began, his voice a low, chilling monotone. He deliberately emphasized the words “assault” and “wife,” twisting the knife.
“Yes, Colonel, of course!” Finchley sputtered, eager to demonstrate his competence. “The police have been notified. An official report has been filed. And the hospital is launching a full investigation at the highest level. We will get to the bottom of this, I assure you.”
He tried to offer a placating smile to Caroline. “Mrs. Romero, whatever you need, anything at all, the hospital will provide.”
The whiplash from his previous dismissiveness to this fawning subservience was jarring. Caroline simply gave a cool, noncommittal nod.
Jarrod cut through the pleasantries. “My requirements are simple,” he said, his eyes locking onto Finchley’s, pinning him in place.
“First: Melanie Thorne is to be terminated. Effective immediately. Her termination will be for cause, with no severance.”
Finchley nodded vigorously. “Done.”

“Second,” Jarrod continued, his voice dropping even lower, “the hospital’s legal counsel will file a formal complaint against her with the state nursing board, recommending the permanent revocation of her license. You will also ensure she is placed on an industry-wide blacklist. She will not work in any medical facility in the D.C. area again.”
Finchley’s eyes widened at the sheer ruthlessness of the demand, but he didn’t dare argue. “It will be done, Colonel.”
“Third. I want a formal, written apology from this hospital, addressed to my wife, for the gross negligence in security and employee oversight that allowed this to happen.”
Each demand was a hammer blow, systematically dismantling not just Melanie’s career, but her entire life. It was total annihilation.
“Absolutely, Colonel. I’ll draft it myself this morning,” Finchley promised, his voice trembling slightly.
Jarrod wasn’t finished. He leaned in slightly, his presence overwhelmingly menacing. “And one more thing, Doctor. I don’t want to read a single word about this in the papers. If any detail of this incident leaks to the media and disrupts my wife’s privacy…” He let the threat hang in the air, unfinished but perfectly understood.
“It won’t!” Finchley squeaked, wiping his brow with the back of his hand. “Complete discretion. I give you my word.”
