Chapter 405:
Her eyes fell on the bedside table. A folded piece of paper sat next to a plate of toast and a glass of milk. It was his handwriting—sharp, angular, and efficient.
Went to check on your father. Breakfast is on the table. Replenish your energy. We continue tonight.
—Your husband.
The note was a perfect blend of thoughtful care and arrogant, possessive command. She couldn’t help but smile.
She pushed herself up, wincing at the protest from her lower back. She moved with caution, mindful of the lingering stiffness, though the physical toll was nothing compared to the clarity of her heart. She reached for the glass of milk. Just as she took the first sip, the door clicked open and he walked in. He’d showered and changed into a simple gray T-shirt and jeans. His left hand was heavily bandaged, and his right arm remained tucked securely into its protective field splint against his ribs. He looked impossibly handsome, though the rigid frame he had to move within served as a stark reminder of his current limitations. The serious, worried lines on his face melted away the moment he saw she was awake, replaced by a look of pure, unadulterated tenderness.
The intensity of his gaze made her feel suddenly self-conscious. She instinctively pulled the thin sheet higher up her chest, the memory of his touch on her skin making her blush deepen.
He crossed the room in a few long strides and sat on the edge of the bed behind her, leaning in carefully to avoid putting pressure on his braced side. He pressed a light, lingering kiss to her neck, his voice a low rumble against her ear. “How’s the energy replenishment coming along?”
The milk went down the wrong way. She choked, sputtering and coughing into her hand.
Instantly, his uninjured right side shifted to offer support, though he remained mindful of the splint. He placed a gentle, steadying hand on her shoulder, a gesture so practiced and natural it was startling. As he helped her catch her breath, he leaned in and whispered, “Don’t worry. I’ll be even more shameless tonight.”
Her face was now the color of a ripe tomato. She grabbed a piece of toast from the plate and tried to shove it in his mouth to shut him up. He caught her fingers with his lips, gently brushing the tip of her index finger for a split second before releasing her.
The rest of the morning passed in a haze of this newfound, playful intimacy. When she went to the bathroom to brush her teeth, he leaned against the doorframe, watching her with a soft, lazy smile.
“What are you looking at?” she asked, her voice muffled by toothpaste.

“My wife,” he said simply. “Can’t get enough of the view.”
But reality, as it always did, intruded. After she had dressed in a clean set of scrubs, the worry she had managed to keep at bay returned.
“How is he?” Caroline asked, the lighthearted mood evaporating. “My father.”
