“You’re so disobedient. Didn’t I tell you to break things off with Amara? Why are you still in touch with her?”

Right now, Keith and Amara were only friends. He could have simply explained that they had broken up and were just keeping in contact as friends, but he didn’t want to. Instead, he said, “Who I choose to keep in touch with is my business. I’m an adult—you don’t need to control my life.”

Edith’s anger flared. “When have I ever meddled with your normal friendships? But is your relationship with Amara normal? Is she even a normal person?”

“What’s so abnormal about Amara?”

Keith had been trying to hold back his anger, but when he heard his mother insult Amara, he couldn’t take it anymore.

Edith was livid. “How could she be normal? What kind of woman gets pregnant before marriage?” She threw several things across the room, then turned on Keith and berated him again.

Keith was done talking to her—he worried he’d lose his temper completely. He shot her an angry look, slammed the door, and walked out.

The office fell silent. After a moment, Edith composed herself and called Emma. “Mrs. Emma Everly, I have a question for you did the people you had following Amara find anything?”

After hanging up, Edith quickly received the photo Emma mentioned. Seeing Amara and Keith sitting by the window, eating together, made her furious.

She called Emma back and they plotted together, deciding to ramp up their online attacks on Amara.

If they couldn’t deal with Amara in person, they’d at least ruin her reputation on the internet. Edith just couldn’t swallow her anger otherwise.
