“He didn’t say anything specific, just mentioned it was an old issue. Honestly, I have no idea what old issue it could be p>
Since graduating from high school, Amara hadn’t really been back to the Sullivan household, and her contact with Larry had been sporadic at best. She had no clue what kind of health problems Larry might have had.
“I’ll come with you,” Finnian said.
Amara instinctively replied, “No need, I can go by myself p>
“He’s my father-in-law,” Finnian quickly countered. “We should both go see him.” Amara hesitated for a moment. True enough, Larry was Finnian’s father-in-law, and Larry would probably appreciate seeing them both together. So, she didn’t argue further, quickly explained the situation to Keith, and headed out the door.
At the hospital room, Amara saw Larry in a hospital gown, lying on the bed. His face, usually so commanding, now appeared a bit pale.
A young nurse was at the bedside, explaining his condition. Amara walked over and asked, “Dad, I’m here. What landed you in the hospital? Why didn’t you tell me about any previous issues p>
Larry waved the nurse away. Once the door was closed, he said, “It’s nothing much. A few years back, I had a benign tumor in my lung; it was removed, but it recently came back p>
Amara paused, falling silent, feelings of mixed emotions swirling within her.
“Is this tumor benign as well?” she asked. “Has it been removed now p>
“Yes, it’s been removed. I had the surgery just yesterday p>
Larry was a tough man, the kind who had built the Sullivan Group from scratch despite having nothing to start with. He was the type to shoulder his burdens alone, keeping his family in the dark.
But Amara couldn’t completely let go of the past. Although she felt a momentary pang of complexity, she quickly composed herself, but her face still showed concern.
“Dad, why didn’t you tell me about something this serious earlier? You should have let me know the first time you got sick so I could help take care of you.” She sighed after that.
“It’s partly my fault for being so wrapped up in my own life back then, not paying much attention to the family. You probably thought ↑ was to immature to handle it. е
That’s why you didn’t call me over p>
Seeing Amara blaming herself, Larry softened a bit and said, “That’s all in the
past. You’re doing great now p>
He glanced at Finnian, his tone turning stern again. “You two are getting a divorce p>
“We’re in the process of it,” Amara quickly said, worried Finnian might blurt out something inappropriate.
Larry’s expression darkened with
disapproval as he rebuked,
“Marriage is a serious matter, not something to be taken lightly. You both are acting so irresponsibly p>
Amara bit her lip hard, looking ashamed. Her mind raced, debating whether to argue.
But she figured any argument would only make Larry angrier, given their differing views. It was better to keep quiet. Hence, she stayed silent, her head bowed.
Unexpectedly, Finnian spoke up, “Larry, the divorce is my fault. Don’t blame her p>
“I think both of you are at fault. Finnian, don’t make excuses,” Larry huffed, turning his head away, refusing to look at them.
Amara was taken aback. Finnian was supposed to be mad at her and yet here he was, standing up for her instead of tattling to Larry. Were pigs flying today?
