The doctor bristled, feeling his professional skills had been insulted.
He said sternly, “Ma’am, although the patient’s thigh was impaled by a steel rod, the injury was not life-threatening, so you don’t need to worry. The surgeons at this hospital are highly skilled. It was just a puncture wound.”
The unspoken message was that Susan had little faith in their abilities.
Susan gave a weak smile. “Sorry, doctor. I was just worried about him.”
The doctor looked at her smile and heard her apology, but he didn’t sense an ounce
of sincerity. In fact, it seemed like she was hoping for the patient’s demise.
Shaking his head, the doctor turned to leave. What kind of family was this?
“Wait, doctor. When we found him, he seemed to have lost his memory.”
The doctor explained, “The head scan showed a severe impact to the back of his head, causing some blood clotting. It’s not a good location for surgery, so we’ll observe him for a while. If the clot dissipates, his memory should return. It’s not too severe, so there’s a high chance he’ll remember everything.”
Susan asked, “Is there any way to make the amnesia permanent?”
The doctor stared.
Seemingly unnerved by such a difficult relative, he quickened his pace, breaking into a light jog as he moved away.
“Pfft Natalie, who had been watching from the side, couldn’t help but laugh.
Susan saw Natalie’s bright, toothy smile and felt a pang of regret. “Sigh! How can such a terrible person have such good luck?”

Susan’s feelings were complicated. She used to wish for Jared to get his comeuppance, but now she understood that trying to change his fate had been a mistake.

The two went to his room, which was spacious. Land was plentiful on the island, so every hospital room was large and bright.
Jared lay on the bed, his face pale and lifeless.
Susan was
troubled. “Natalie, Mrs.
Scott has already disowned him, and
I doubt Nathan and Joanna will come take care of him. If we don’t, what will happen to him? And if looks like he really does have amnesia.”
Natalie said, “Susan, call Mrs. Scott. There’s no way she’d abandon her own son.”
Wendy had sent Jerome abroad to protect him.
She’d kicked Jared out to make Joanna see him as a useless pawn, preventing her from having a chance to harm him.
Susan hesitated for a moment, knowing she had completely fallen out with the Scott family. “Alright,” she said quietly.
She took out her phone and called Wendy.
“Susan,” Wendy’s voice was as kind as ever.
Susan explained, “Natalie and I
