Horace shook his head. “Miss, that’s highly unlikely. I’ve checked numerous times. She grew up in that small mountain village and has no record of ever going abroad. Her background is very simple. To take your place in marrying Sebastian, she didn’t even finish high school.”
“I’ve already investigated three times, each time very thoroughly. There’s absolutely no mistake.”
Joanna frowned, lost in thought.
Something still felt wrong.
“Do you really think those men she’s with would give her fifty million dollars with no expectation of personal gain?”
Joanna couldn’t wrap her head around it. She never believed Natalie possessed that kind of charm.
Yet, she had produced fifty million to buy land. First a designer, and now this. Joanna had truly underestimated her.
Horace remained silent, then shook his head. “Miss, we’ve been on the island filming recently. I’ll investigate again when we get back. Perhaps she bought the land on behalf of someone else.”
It was as if Joanna had found a breakthrough. Horace’s last sentence convinced her.
“Could it be for Keith?”
Horace nodded. “It’s possible. The heiress of Ceryn Corp. is also in real estate. Anyone familiar with the company knows that Keith is just the acting CEO. The true power behind him is the family’s heiress.”
Joanna breathed a silent sigh of relief. She couldn’t stand the idea of Natalie being more capable than her.
She looked up at Horace with a faint smile. “Investigate thoroughly when we get back. I’m not at ease. That fool Natalie is completely out of our control now.”
Just as Joanna finished speaking, she received a call from Wendy.
She gestured for Horace to leave before answering.
“Hello, Mom.”
“Joanna, dear, are you adjusting to life on the island? Is the food alright?” Wendy asked with a laugh.
Joanna smiled back. “Mom, I’m doing great here, and the food is fine. Thanks for asking.”
“I’m glad to hear that. I’m calling because we found out Sarah embezzled two hundred million, which is what broke our company’s capital chain it’s all clear now and ve sent her to prison.”
“I’ve already handed her over to the police. If she doesn’t pay the money back, I’ll file for compulsory enforcement.”
“Our company is on the verge of collapse, and yet we have this kind of parasite stealing from us. Joanna, that wretched woman almost died during childbirth.”
“As her boss, I gave her four months of paid maternity leave. When her mother was sick, I was the one who lent her money for the surgery. I helped her with everything.”

Wendy’s voice was choked with sobs.

That idiot Sarah would definitely talk.
If Sarah confessed that Joanna had masterminded it, she would be finished.
