Chapter 681
Livia:
“Mother,” I asked in a soft voice, “I am afraid to ask you but did they hurt you?”
She looked at me and slowly shook her head.
“No. Your father protected me before they took him away. I had passed out during everything that happened, but he made sure I was safe before they came back for him.
“By the time I woke up, I found out what they had done to him.”
My mother rubbed both hands over her face, trying to wipe away her tears.
“What happened then?” I asked.
For a brief moment, she fell silent. Then a small smile appeared on her lips.
“Then I got pregnant.”
She gently touched my cheek, and I smiled back.
“Was it me?” I asked, pointing at my chest and she nodded.
“You and your two sisters.”
The moment she said that, my smile vanished.
“What?” I asked, my voice turning flat.
“It was a triplet pregnancy.”
Once again, her smile faded, and an uneasy feeling settled in my stomach.
“My two sisters–” I hesitated. “What happened to them?”
My mother shrugged.
“I don’t know,” she mumbled, widening my eyes.
It felt as though she had hidden far too much from me.
“Mother, what happened to Father? Is he with my sisters? Are they in the werewolf world?”
I fired question after question at her, but she only shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
She turned her face away, and I immediately realized she was lying.
“Mother, tell me the truth. What happened to Father and my sisters?”
This time, I demanded an answer, holding her gaze and refusing to look away. She took a deep breath.
Then she shattered my world.
“After many failed transformations, your father finally completed the change during one full moon. He became a huge winged monster. The most terrifying one.”
The moment she finished speaking, I pressed both hands to my chest and gasped before breaking down.
The man who had been bringing me strangers wasn’t anyone else.
He was my father.
My poor father, forced into a monstrous form.
My mother took a deep breath and turned to look at me.
“After that, whenever he transformed, it would take him days to return to his human form. And every time, the duration grew longer.”
She sniffled and rubbed her hands anxiously.
“But at least he got to be with his three little angels. That’s what he used to call you.”
A faint smile touched her lips at the memory, but tears soon followed.
“You know,” she murmured, “one day he transformed and never changed back.” A sob escaped her.
“Then people came to attack him because they wanted to get to me. They wanted to kill my children because they knew I was a grey wolf.”
She broke down again as she revealed more of her past.
It seemed those cruel people had found an easy target. It had started with lust and
ended with them discovering that my mother was a rare kind of wolf. They had used
that as an excuse to pursue her and satisfy their twisted desires.
“How did we end up here?” I asked, squeezing her hand.
My mother swallowed hard.
“You were all very young at the time. One day, a woman came to me asking for help. She claimed she had a small child with her and was running from abusive people. et her stay in the cabin. That’s when I realized she had been sent by them. The next thing new, she attacked me. During the fight, she injured me badly. Then she grabbed two of your sisters and ran.”
My heart clenched.
“Before she could come back for you, your father arrived. He attacked her, but he stopped when he saw me crawling onto the porch covered in blood. He knew he had to save me or I would die. At the same time, more people arrived. He could have killed them all, but his focus was on me and his children.”
She paused in tears.
“That woman escaped with two of your sisters while I was left bleeding to death with you sitting beside me crying. You were only a toddler. So your father carried both of us to the
human world. Later, we were the
rescued by some people.”
My mother paused, taking a deep breath before wiping her cheeks.
“I had already found a way to mask our wolves, but I don’t know what happened to
your sisters.”
As she spoke, she pointed to the pendants around our necks.
“Am I a grey wolf too?” I asked and she nodded very sadly.
To survive in the human world, we had pretended to be wolfless.
“Does that mean my sisters are grey wolves too?” I asked, hope filling my voice.
Her smile disappeared completely.
“Only if they’re still alive.”
The words hit me like a physical blow.
“Your father never brought them back. But he keeps bringing people because he
thinks they’ll become our family.”
My mother broke down again as she mentioned Gina.
“I don’t know why he brought her here.”
A painful thought settled in my mind.
Had my father mistaken Gina for one of my sisters?
Maybe he didn’t even realize how many years had passed.
And maybe my sisters were already gone.
