Chapter 777
Baxter:
I tightened my grip around the silver dagger as Sawyer turned toward me.
His cold eyes locked onto mine before he charged.
I waited until the last second before stepping aside.
His claw sliced through the air where I had been standing only a heartbeat earlier.
I drove the dagger into his side.
He roared in pain, stumbling a step forward before swinging his arm at me again.
I ducked beneath the attack and slashed across his forearm.
Smoke rose from the wound as the silver and iron burned through his skin.
The sprinklers continued pouring over him.
They were the very thing weakening him more and more.
Enraged, Sawyer lunged again, throwing his full weight at me.
I planted my foot and shifted to the side.
He crashed into the stage railing.
Before he could recover, I buried the dagger in his shoulder.
He howled and lashed out blindly.
One claw caught my sleeve, tearing the fabric, but I stayed on my feet.
However, where it had torn through my sleeve, the water reached my exposed skin.
A burning sensation spread through me.
Oh, dear Lord, it was painful.
No wonder he had been in so much agony.
At the same time, his movements became slower.
His breathing grew louder.
The constant exposure to silver and iron was finally taking its toll on him.
My condition wasn’t much better.
By this point, the water had gotten into my eyes, ears, and mouth as well.
He charged one last time.
This time, he slammed into me with his full body weight, throwing me against the stage.
Pain shot through my ribs, making it feel as though they had been crushed.
I tried to get back up, but he charged again.
This time, his claw slashed across my stomach.
A cry of pain escaped my lips as I crashed onto the stage.
Water from the sprinklers was beginning to pool across the floor.
The burning sensation intensified.
For a moment, I felt exactly what Sawyer must have been feeling.
He came at me again.
This time, I was ready.
At the last second, I drove the dagger deep into his stomach.
He let out a deafening howl.
His massive frame immediately began to shrink.
He collapsed onto the stage, his eyes still fixed on me.
I could tell sleep was overtaking him.
His enormous body slumped to one side.
Slowly, his eyes closed.
The transformation reversed until he was back in his human form, wearing nothing
but a pair of shorts.
The sprinklers finally shut off.
They had run dry.
For a brief moment, the entire theater fell silent.
“Guards!” I called, never taking my eyes off Sawyer. “Arrest him.”
The guards who had been hiding rushed onto the stage.
They hesitated before pulling the dagger from his stomach. Sawyer didn’t move.
Still, they quickly secured handcuffs around his wrists.
“Make sure you put him in a silver cage,” instructed, motioning formet
them to
“I’ll deal with
take him away. everything else later.”
“But what if he wakes up?” one of the guards asked nervously.
“Don’t
by,” I replied through
gritted teeth, one hand pha
against my stomach. “We’ll have a
present
t waiting for him
I spoke with complete confidence, even though every inch of my body burned.
As I stepped off the stage, people slowly began returning to see what had happened.
They stared at Sawyer before turning to me.
“You really saved us,” one of the students said with a grateful smile.
“Oh my God, you’re a hero!” another student exclaimed.
“Thank you,” a boy said as he approached me.
“You have no idea how many people you saved.”
The principal appeared out of nowhere.
I hadn’t even seen him during the chaos.
He must have rushed to the back of the theater and hidden beneath the seats.
I simply nodded and kept walking.
The real battle wasn’t over yet.
I needed to get out of there.
I was in a lot of pain.
Once I walked out of the theater, people followed me.
They called me a hero, chanted my name, and thanked me while I restlessly looked
around.
Then I saw Daniel rush toward me.
“Are you okay?” he asked as he quickly wrapped my arm around his shoulder,
helping me toward his car.
“How is she?” I asked, referring to Livia.
“I think she passed out from fear,” Daniel replied as he opened the passenger-side
door and helped me inside.
She was lying in the back seat.
We were definitely headed to the hospital.
“Make sure you’re the one who treats me,” I told him. “Don’t let anyone else.”
He gave me a silent nod.
He knew the deal.
He would never betray my trust by letting another doctor treat me.
he
“And by the way, you proved you’re just as strong as the rest of us,” k remarked, reminding him how he had thrown himself in front of Livia and taken such a huge gamble to save her life.
A faint smile crossed his face.
He closed the door and walked around to the driver’s side.
Once he got in, he looked at me and smiled.
“I guess we’ve already built a good image of you. They expect you to be the next
president.”
The moment he said that, I smiled.
Big mistake.
Pain immediately shot through my body.
“Now come on. Take me to the hospital, you idiot,” I grumbled.
Daniel laughed as he drove us away.
