Chapter 784
Madeline:
“The monster brought her first, then everyone else,” Livia explained while I
continued hugging Gina.
I’m sure Elara was confused at some point about why I wasn’t paying any attention to her.
Thankfully, Baxter was with her.
Just looking around made my eyes fill with tears.
I was back in a place where I didn’t have to do everything on my own anymore.
I looked up from hugging Gina for a brief moment and watched Baxter playing with Elara.
She looked so happy, and it reminded me of the way he used to play with her.
Then my thoughts drifted back to the time when I was all alone.
I had friends, but nothing could fill the void Baxter had left behind.
Now, though, I had my husband back, the man who always knew how to make things better.
“Mommy, I’m gonna choke now,” Gina murmured softly, making me laugh as I loosened my embrace and gently pulled away.
“Mommy, I love you,” she whispered, making me wrap my arms around her again.
I’m not sure if you realize it or not, but her mother lived through the worst time of her life after believing she had lost her.
“And I thought the monster had killed my husband.”
I finally spoke as I let Gina go because she was starting to squirm out of my arms so she could go to Elara.
Elara slipped out of Baxter’s arms and ran toward her sister.
As I sat on the couch, I felt like an outsider among them.
“No, the monster would never do that. It isn’t a bad creature.”
Livia’s words caught my attention.
She always spoke passionately whenever the monster came up.
Once, Daniel said the monster was simply too dangerous because he might start killing people.
Livia immediately shut him down.
I scooted to the side when I felt like someone else was nearby.
I turned toward the second guest room, and the door immediately slammed shut.
“Who’s in there?” I asked, pointing at the door.
Livia exchanged a glance with Daniel.
“It’s Nina,” Baxter replied, making my eyes widen in shock.
“Wait, why is she in the mansion? I mean, what’s she still doing here? Her husband is gone. Shouldn’t she be gone too?”
I didn’t know what came over me, but just the thought of her being there irritated me.
Not because I was jealous, but because I’d found out she had tricked Sawyer and put him in a coma.
That was why I couldn’t get any help and ended up agreeing to marry Graham and then Elgin.
I was angry.
Even though I didn’t care about Sawyer, Nina was an opportunist, and I wasn’t happy having her around.
“I let her stay here.”
Then, in a soft, gentle, yet confident voice, Baxter spoke up.
I could tell from the look on his face that he knew he’d made a mistake by admitting that.
“And may I know why?” I asked, my jaw clenching.
Oh, he could see how furious I was.
I watched him pause before slowly shifting in his seat as though he were in pain.
“She doesn’t have anyone,” he replied, avoiding my eyes.
“First of all, where is her scummy father?” I asked, crossing one leg over the other. My fist clenched as I rested my arm on my thigh.
“Second of all, so you are her everything now?” I pressed, looking him straight in the eye.
I guessed I just didn’t want to hear anyone else’s name come out of Baxter’s mouth anymore.
I’d lost him, and I’d thought I would never see him again.
If he knew me well enough, he’d know I was going to put him in a cage just to keep him with me.
That was how obsessed I’d become.
And I was never, ever going to let anyone take him away from me again.
“Wait,” Daniel interrupted as he immediately got up from the couch and hurried over to sit beside me.
“I can answer that question,” he offered, trying to get my attention.
I turned to him and raised an eyebrow.
“She has the official seal, some important documents, and the keys to all the weapons and armories.”
Now that was a proper explanation.
He’d explained it in a way that immediately made me realize she was here for areason not because she had no one and my husband wanted to take care of her
It only confused me even more.
Why would Baxter knowingly say that to me?
Was he trying to get a reaction out of me?
Was he enjoying my anger?
Or my jealousy?
I didn’t care.
I’d happily show him just how jealous I was over him.
But we’d only just found each other again after so long.
Why would he risk it?
While I was lost in thought, Baxter got to his feet and rolled his shoulders back.
“We have so much to do. My son is
in the werewolf land, and I h
bring him home he decla
determination evident in his voice.
Just watching him made my heart pound.
