Chapter 819
Madeline:
Her question was bizarre, but also frightening because how could an ordinary woman living in the human world know about a gray wolf?
Usually, even werewolves consider it a myth.
That was until I transitioned and they realized that, yeah, it really did exist.
So how could some random woman ask me that question the first time she met me? “Who are you?” I asked her immediately.
“Wait, Mother, why would you ask that question?” Livia intervened, pointing at me as she placed a hand on her mother’s shoulder.
Her mother turned to her daughter, took her hand off her shoulder, and held it between both of hers.
“Answer me. Is your wolf gray?” the woman asked me again, still holding her daughter’s hand as tears started to fall from her eyes.
“No,” I replied confidently.
“Don’t lie to me. Tell me,” she insisted, looking down and closing her eyes.
I didn’t know why, but seeing her cry made me feel strange, like I didn’t want to see her cry like that.
But why was she asking me such personal questions? That was beyond me.
“Answer me,” she insisted again.
My heart pounded so hard it felt like it might burst out of my chest.
I sucked in another sharp breath and uttered, “What do you know about the gray wolf?”
As soon as I asked that question, Livia’s eyes narrowed at me.
“Do you have a gray wolf?”
This time, the question came from Livia, and there was much more pressure behind
it.
The two women were acting strangely.
Now they were watching me like they had me cornered.
Then it hit me.
What if they already had information about me and were trying to use it to blackmail me into keeping quiet and not questioning them about the monster on the mountain top?
But why would they do that? What was their connection to the monster?
All these thoughts were running through my mind when the woman placed her hand
on Livia’s head and uttered, “My daughter has a gray wolf too.”
The minute she said that, I sucked in another sharp breath.
My eyes moved to Livia, who, just a few hours ago, had been so concerned about keeping the truth about her wolf from me.
Yet now, she looked rather emotional.
Livia quickly covered her face with her hands and started to cry.
It just didn’t make any sense.
How could Livia have a gray wolf?
And her mother knew about it and was so casual about it.
“I have a gray wolf too.” The woman placed a hand on her own chest, smiling through her tears.
I just kept watching their faces, unable to understand what any of this meant.
“Only four women in this world have gray wolves, Madeline, and they are a mother and her triplet daughters.”
As soon as the older woman said that, my heart completely stopped.
“Well, that is not true. You have all the information wrong,” I said to her, forcing a smile onto my lips.
The answer was right there, but something was stopping me from accepting it.
I didn’t know why I was refusing to believe it. Maybe because it seemed too good to be true.

She looked just as anxious, but there was a shine in her eyes and a smile on her
lips that shocked me.
“Because—” I paused, sucking in a deep breath.
“Because you have a gray wolf,” the woman said.
Lydia immediately got up and clutched her hair in her hand, stepping away from us.
“How can this- how can that be true?” I heard her let out a little whimper.
“No, it’s not. I don’t have a gray wolf,” I said, smiling through the pain.

I finished watching their faces.
I wasn’t even trying to understand what they were trying to tell me, even though I
knew what they were saying.
Maybe I was in denial.
The minute I answered, thinking that would put them at ease, the woman clutched
her chest and started to cry.
She literally bawled her eyes out like a child.
“My daughter, my Madeline.”
As soon as she said that, the hair on the back of my neck stood up.
Until now, I’d been thinking this wasn’t possible.
But now she was saying it out loud.
“Her name is Jayla,” Livia responded, pointing at the woman.
My mouth hung open, and emotions rushed through me.
“What?” I asked rather softly.
