Harrison’s heart melted at her antics. He coaxed her, “I’ll be back this afternoon. It won’t be long. I might even be able to pick you up on the way home.”
“Really?” Anastasia’s eyes lit up.
“Really.”
That made her happy. She looked up and kissed him on the chin. “I’m going in then!”
“Go on.”
Anastasia got out of the car and walked through the main gates of the Global Harmony Medical Institute. When she looked back, the car was still parked there, Harrison still watching her from inside.
A warm feeling suddenly swelled in her heart. She smiled brightly, waved at him, and then went inside.
There were quite a few people taking the assessment today, but not many were in her situation.
She was here early because of Mr. Lockwood’s recommendation. Most of the others were either candidates selected annually from the various branches of the Institute, or they were already at headquarters but had unsatisfactory results and were taking one last assessment.
If this latter group failed again, they would be sent back to their respective branches.
As for Anastasia, without Mr. Lockwood’s letter of recommendation, she would have had to stay at the Fairhaven branch for at least two more years before becoming eligible for a promotion, according to the rules.
Following the instructions on her pre-printed admission ticket, Anastasia found her examination room, sat down, and calmly waited for the test to begin.
It was worth noting that Queena was one of the proctor’s assistants today.
Seeing that it was almost time, she made her usual rounds through the exam room.
And on this round, she saw Anastasia!
Her expression changed abruptly. She grabbed another assistant next to her. “What is she doing here?!”
The assistant glanced in the direction she was pointing, looking puzzled. “She’s here to take the test, of course.”
“That’s not what I’m asking!” Queena frowned. “Who are the people allowed in this exam room today? They’re either recommended from the lower branches or they’re here for their final chance. Whicho category does she fall into?!” Cóntent
According to what she had heard from Nora Gabriel, Anastasia had indeed gotten lucky and joined the Faubaven branch of the Institute, but as a newcomer, she had no
qualifications to be recommended for advancement!
Thinking of Anastasia’s backing from the Lancaster family, Queena sneered, certain
that Anastasia must have used her family’s influence to pull some strings.
If she hadn’t seen such a shameful act, she could have ignored it. But now that she had, how could she turn a blind eye?
“I know that person. She is not qualified to take this assessment. Go and inform the head proctor and have her removed!”
Inside the exam room.
Anastasia was thinking about Harrison while waiting for the test to begin when someone walked up and tapped on her desk.
“Excuse me, miss. Upon review, we’ve determined you are not eligible to take this assessment. Please leave the exam room.”
What?
Anastasia looked up, thinking she had misheard.
“I’m not eligible?” She pointed to the admission ticket on her desk. “Then what is this?”
“What does that prove?” the assistant sneered. “Some peoplez may not be qualified, but they can always use their connections to get in through the back door, can’t they?”
“Miss, I’m trying to be discreet to spare you the embarrassment!”
At these words, everyone in the room turned to look at Anastasia, their expressions varied.
But Anastasia was completely baffled.
She had gotten in fair and square with Mr. Lockwood’s recommendation. When had
she ever pulled strings?
