From the top of the stairs, Anastasia caught Marcus’s incredulous stare and shot him a glare. “What are you looking at?”
She knew perfectly well that when her grandmother had come upstairs, he had been lurking by the door, a poorly concealed smirk on his face while he feigned sympathy with dramatic sighs.
Marcus cleared his throat, his expression instantly neutral. “Just concerned about you.”
Anastasia huffed, not bothering to argue. She was more worried about something else now-what had happened with Lauren?

Benson was silent for a moment. “No, she’s not dead. They just managed to stabilize her. But she’s paralyzed from the neck down. The doctors say she’ll be bedridden for the rest of her life.”
“I see,” Anastasia said, a note of undisguised pleasure in her soft voice. “That’s wonderful news.”
This time, Benson’s silence was longer. When he finally spoke, he didn’t ask any more questions. “Grandma and Grandpa, and my parents, are all at the hospital. Grandpa wants you to come.”
