Delia’s voice was edged with worry.
Anastasia had given them a deadline: three days to return the money and vacate the house.
But eighty million dollars? So far, the best they’d managed to scrape together was thirty million, and they hadn’t even started packing.

Before Donna could say a word, the matriarch-Elder Mrs. Sinclair-shouted at the top of her lungs.
She slammed the table with a heavy hand. “The deed’s got my son’s name on it! I’d like to see that little upstart try to do something about it!”
Elder Mrs. Sinclair had spent most of her life in the countryside. Only after her children struck it rich did she get to move into the city and become the kind of “wealthy old lady” everyone envied. Yet no matter how much gold she wore, her old habits never changed.
She could twist any argument to her advantage-never mind that the house was legally in Julian’s name.
That meant the house was theirs, and no one was going to take it from them!
Julian kicked back in his chair, a cigarette dangling from his lips, looking smug. “Mom’s right. We’re not going anywhere. What’s she going to do, throw us out herself?”
Donna wrinkled her nose at her mother-in-law’s antics, but deep down, she agreed.
With all three adults united in stubbornness, Delia finally relaxed. She started to feel invincible, too.

BANG!
The front door burst open with a single, forceful kick.

Three days had passed, and the family hadn’t even bothered to pack. Clearly, they didn’t take her warning seriously.
In that instant, even Julian and Donna found themselves cowed by the young woman’s presence.
But Elder Mrs. Sinclair wasn’t so easily intimidated. She sprang to her feet, huffing, “What do you think you’re doing? This is the Sinclair house! Do you have any idea how expensive that door is? If you broke it, could you even afford to pay for it?!”
Anastasia’s lips curled into a mocking smile. “I bought you a four-million-dollar home, and you think I can’t afford a door?”
Her tone iced over. “But you’re mistaken about one thing, ma’am if the door’s broken, I don’t have to pay a cent. After all, it’s my property, isn’t it?”
“My property? Who says it’s yours? Why don’t you check whose name is on the deed before you run your mouth!”
Elder Mrs. Sinclair was in full tantrum mode, all traces of the sweet old lady she’d been when she wanted something utterly gone.
Anastasia let out a cold laugh.
“Whose name, you ask? Maybe you should be asking why your son’s name is there at all!”
“Really, you Sinclairs are something else. The word ‘ingrate’ might as well have been invented for your family!”
“If it wasn’t for my mother, all of you would’ve starved to death long ago. Would you even have what you do now?”
“And how did you repay her? The daughter seduced her best friend’s husband. The son stole the benefactor’s house. The granddaughter spends dirty money and still has the nerve to parade around town as a little heiress.”
Delia’s face turned crimson in an instant.
“Anastasia! You-!”
“What, did I say something wrong? Who’s out there pretending to be some highborn lady—wasn’t that you? Who’s always bragging about living in Elysian Estates-wasn’t that you?”
Elysian Estates was the city’s most exclusive neighborhood. Delia never missed a chance to flaunt her address, basking in the envy and flattery of her friends. She’d been living for that attention.
