Chapter 243
“If I get hurt, that gives you the perfect excuse to deal with Alice. She’s so annoying.” Fresh chapters posted on.net
She never took Alice seriously, but she understood that the debt Mary’s husband owed the old woman for saving his life wasn’t so easily erased. If they got rid of the mother and daughter without cause, it would certainly tarnish his reputation.
But if she got injured almost fell off the stage and ended up seriously hurt that would change everything.
Of course, she didn’t think Alice and her mother were worth risking her own safety over. She simply trusted him enough to know nothing would really happen to her.
She explained her reasoning, but Harrison’s face only grew darker.
Babe?”
A vein pulsed at Harrison’s temple. He wanted nothing more than to haul her up and give her a proper scolding for still thinking she hadn’t done anything wrong.
He bit back his anger.
“Alice? She isn’t anyone. If you don’t like her, I’ll take care of her. What more reason do I need?”
He let go of her ankle, his tall, imposing figure looming at the bedside. “Or do you really think I care more about my reputation than your safety?”
Anastasia fell silent.
She realized he was truly angry this time, and without hesitation, she blurted, “Babe, I was wrong!”
Harrison’s expression remained hard as stone, unmoved by her apology.
Just then, a bodyguard announced from outside, “Mr. Harrison Lancaster, the president of Kingsbridge University is here!”
Harrison’s face grew even colder. “Let them in,” he said icily.
It wasn’t just Lionel who entered, but Mr. Pierce as well.
“M-Mr. Lancaster!”
When Mr. Pierce caught sight of Anastasia lying in the hospital bed, his forced smile grew even more strained.
Before coming, he’d consoled himself over and over: Maybe Anastasia and Mr. Lancaster weren’t that close. Maybe Mr. Lancaster was just being kind and helping someone who’d gotten hurt.
But faced with the scene before him-the great Harrison Lancaster personally bringing her to the hospital and waiting by her side-he could no longer deceive himself.
No one is that generous out of mere kindness.
“What brings you here?” Harrison didn’t bother to sit, his cold gaze sweeping over the two men and nearly knocking Mr. Pierce off his feet with its intensity.
Standing at the bedside, Harrison towered above them. Neither university president dared sit either; Mr. Pierce was practically bent in half with nerves.
“I—I’m here to apologize, Mr. Lancaster!” Mr. Pierce stammered, mopping sweat from his brow and forcing a smile. “Today’s incident wasn’t handled properly on our end. I’m terribly sorry for any distress it caused you
Watching his trembling, obsequious display, Anastasia curled her lips in a mocking smile.
Now he’s afraid? Where was that bravado when he stripped me of my nomination? Back then, he was practically gloating.
She snorted and tugged on Harrison’s sleeve, ready to air her grievances. “Babe, this Mr. Pierce? He was oh-so-impressive before. My classmates worked hard to get me that nomination, but he just took it away-said I didn’t deserve it, that it should go to someone else. Oh, that’s right, to the illustrious, well-connected Ms. Alice!”
She puffed out her cheeks in frustration. “Otherwise, I would have been the one giving you flowers onstage today!”
Harrison had planned to ignore her, hoping she’d take the time to reflect. But when he looked down and met her pleading, slightly aggrieved gaze, he couldn’t bring himself to push her hand away.
