Chapter 404
Logan arrived at the Brennan estate.
The Brennan family had no desire to see Anastasia, but since Logan came bearing Harrison’s name, they couldn’t exactly turn him away.
“Mr. Harrison Lancaster?” Mr. Brennan looked surprised when the butler delivered the message.
Their family had no real connection to Rosewood Manor, so why would Harrison Lancaster send someone over?
Mrs. Brennan, sitting nearby, suddenly spoke up. “Could it be because of Ana Mr. Brennan fell silent.
Even though they’d made it clear to outsiders that they wanted nothing to do with Anastasia, their estranged granddaughter, it wasn’t as if they never paid any attention to her at all.
So, of course, they knew about Anastasia marrying into Rosewood Manor.
Now, Mr. Brennan realized that if there was any link between their family and Harrison Lancaster, it had to be Anastasia.
“Let him in,” Mr. Brennan sighed at last.
Murray was at work, Benson had gone out, but Winni and Juliet came downstairs when they heard the commotion, exchanging puzzled glances. What was Logan doing here?
Lauren trailed behind, and when she heard Logan was visiting, her heart skipped a beat. Her mind immediately jumped to that old ginseng root she’d gifted the family patriarch.
No, she reassured herself, only the family knew about that. There’s no way Anastasia could have found out.
Logan entered the parlor.
He greeted the elderly couple respectfully. “Good afternoon, sir. Ma’am.”
As he spoke, he discreetly sized them up.
Mr. Brennan’s hair and beard were stark white, but his gaze was sharp and upright, his posture radiating authority. Clearly, he was not a man to be underestimated. Mrs. Brennan, on the other hand, had a warmth and gentle kindness about her—a grandmotherly sort who seemed easy to get along with.
The Brennans were surprised by Logan’s deference. After all, Logan was Harrison Lancaster’s right-hand man-someone even heads of powerful families treated with respect. Why was he showing such courtesy to them? TÊœe source of this á´„ontent ɪs.net
Of course, Logan thought privately, it was all for his lady’s sake.
“What brings you here today, Logan?” Mr. Brennan asked, his tone polite.
Logan offered a faint smile and got straight to the point. “I’m here on behalf of Mr. Harrison Lancaster. I’ve come to retrieve something.”
Mr. Brennan looked confused. “Retrieve something?”
“Yes,” Logan replied. “My lady heard you were unwell, sir, so she brought a gift yesterday and came in person to visit. Unfortunately, she wasn’t allowed inside, but she left the gift behind. Later, we heard the Brennan family didn’t care for it and tossed everything in the trash.”
At those words, both Mr. and Mrs. Brennan’s expressions changed dramatically.
Mr. Brennan managed to keep his composure, but Mrs. Brennan’s eyes immediately reddened. She looked as if she might leap to her feet in agitation. “Ana came to see her grandfather? Is that true? When?”
Mr. Brennan’s stern gaze landed on his daughter-in-law, Winni.
Winni kept her tone respectful. “I didn’t have time to receive her, so I didn’t let her in. I also didn’t mention it to you because I didn’t want to upset you.”
Her answer was careful and measured, but Mr. Brennan wasn’t fooled. No time to receive her? He knew perfectly well she just hadn’t wanted Anastasia to set foot in their home.
After her miscarriage years ago, Winni’s affection for the niece she once adored had vanished completely.
Mr. Brennan understood this, so he said nothing more.
He turned back to Logan. “Logan, you just said
“Oh, yes,” Logan replied calmly. “When Mr. Harrison Lancaster heard that the Brennan family had thrown away the gifts my lady left, he sent me over to collect them.”
Logan’s smile was cool and polite. “After all, none of those items were ordinary. More importantly, every single one was specially chosen and prepared by my lady herself for your family. Each one carried her heartfelt wishes. How could they simply be tossed in the trash? If your family doesn’t care for them, we’ll gladly take them back ourselves.”
