Chapter 391
Winni didn’t agree right away. Instead, she glanced at Lauren first, worried that if they showed too much kindness to Anastasia, Lauren might feel left out.
But Lauren just smiled, gracious and composed. “Uncle and Juliet are right,” she said. “Since there’s still room in our car, we should give her a ride. Don’t worry about me, Auntie, I won’t overthink it.”
Only then did Winni’s lips curve into a smile. She looked fondly at Lauren and said, “I knew our Lauren has a good heart.”
Standing to the side, Anastasia watched their little family council unfold. They deliberated together as one unit, while she was left on the outside utterly and unmistakably an outsider.
Especially when Lauren spoke, she cast Anastasia a glance-deliberate or not, it was hard to tell. But the phrase “our car,” followed by “I won’t overthink it,” was almost laughable.
Who was supposed to be overthinking here, really? Lauren, who’d stepped into someone else’s place and inherited someone else’s life, had nothing to worry about. If anyone had reason to feel uneasy, it was Anastasia.
She let out a quiet, sardonic laugh. “No need. I have my own ride.”
Benson, who’d just started to relax after his parents agreed to drive Anastasia, immediately tensed again. His strong brows drew together in obvious disapproval. “What car? Where?”
Anastasia kept her tone light, about to answer, when suddenly several sleek black cars pulled up, tires screeching to a halt all around them.
Everyone froze in surprise.
What on earth was happening?
Before they could react, Logan hurried out of the lead car. The moment he saw Anastasia unharmed, he breathed a huge sigh of relief. “Ma’am!”
Anastasia stared, stunned.
What was Logan doing at the hospital-and with such a dramatic entourage?
Wait.
A realization hit her like a bolt. She’d called Logan earlier to handle the car accident, worried evidence might get tampered with. She hadn’t called Harrison- she didn’t want to worry him. But how could she expect Logan to keep something like this from Harrison? She’d been so frantic she’d completely overlooked that detail.
Harrison stepped out of the car, his gaze locking onto her the instant his feet touched the ground. He strode toward her, tension in every line of his body, barely keeping his composure.
Before Anastasia could react, he pulled her into a fierce embrace.
“Darling? What are you doing here Her voice was small, sheepish, guilt flickering across her face.
“Are you hurt?” Harrison’s voice was tight, like a guitar string wound to the point of snapping.
Feeling the intensity of his worry, Anastasia shook her head quickly. “No, not at all. I’m perfectly fine-you can check if you want
She spread her arms, half tempted to jump up and spin around to prove it.
Only then did Harrison’s panic subside. But his expression turned icy as he demanded, “Why didn’t you call me?”
His calloused fingers brushed a smudge of dirt from her face-the mark left when she’d fallen in the accident.
His eyes were dark with anger. “You called Logan, but not me?”
“I’m sorry, sweetheart, it was my mistake Anastasia wrapped her arms around his waist and apologized without hesitation. Chapters fırst released on
Harrison seethed, his anger simmering just below the surface. He forced himself
to let it go for now and asked, “If you’re fine, why are you still standing out here? Why not go home?”
Only then did Anastasia remember the Brennans standing nearby. She instinctively turned to glance at them.
