Lauren’s expression shifted violently. “Shut your mouth!” she snarled. She shot a panicked look at the maids, then dragged Penny away from the house, her eyes blazing. “You are my aunt, not my mother! If you dare spout that nonsense to anyone else”
“How is it nonsense?!” Penny had spent years hiding their true relationship for Lauren’s sake, never even hearing her own daughter call her ‘Mom’. She had schemed and planned for Lauren’s future, and now her daughter was showing her no loyalty. It was more than she could bear. “Lauren, do you have any idea what I sacrificed so the Brennans would adopt you? Are you really going to be such an ungrateful wretch?”
“And don’t you forget,” Penny threatened, her voice dropping lower, “the Brennans only took you in because they believed you were an orphan. What do you think will happen if they find out I’m your mother? Do you think you’ll get to keep your place as their precious adopted daughter—or as the heir to Health Virtuoso?!”
When she had first appeared claiming to be Lauren’s aunt, the Brennans had been hesitant. They had considered simply sponsoring Lauren’s education instead of a f fulf adoption. It was only when Renny insisted she was a distant relative, not a close one, that they had changed their minds.
At the threat, Lauren’s eyes filled with a murderous light. “Then go tell them,” she challenged. “Go on! Let the Brennans find out and throw me out! Then we can both have nothing!”
Penny’s threat was just an empty one, and she knew it. As long as Lauren was a Brennan, she could still benefit from the connection. If Lauren was cast out, all their schemes would have been for nothing.
