After what happened with Alice Porter, the family matriarch sent Mary back to Riverton. Out of a sliver of old sentiment, she wasn’t completely cast out, but her position was certainly not what it used to be.

Mary was deeply resentful of the Lancaster family for this. When Naomi returned to the country a few days ago and heard what had happened, she brought Mary to live with the Lawson family.

Harrison didn’t consider himself close to Naomi, but she was interested in him and had often found excuses to visit the Lancaster estate, so she was naturally quite familiar with Mary.
