Mignon studied her with a gaze that was appraising but not intrusive, then smiled gently. “Hello, Anastasia. I’ve heard so much about you and have always wanted to meet you in person. Now that I have, I see you are every bit as remarkable as the rumors say p>
Surprised, Anastasia smiled modestly. “I haven’t really accomplished much. You’re too kind, Mrs. Calderon p>
Mignon shook her head. “Not at all. You’re Mr. Austin’s prized student and the one who cured Mr. Harrison Lancaster. Your achievements have already left so many others in the dust p>
As the head of a major family, Mignon was naturally well-informed. Though Lester hadn’t said anything, the name ‘Anastasia’ was enough for her to recognize the young woman before her.
She was Mr. Austin’s protégé, a rising star in the medical community, and, most notably, Mrs. Lancaster-the cherished, newlywed wife of Harrison Lancaster.
Mignon had always admired capable people, but beyond that, there was something familiar about the girl that made her feel an instant sense of warmth.
Anastasia also felt a strong sense of admiration for Mignon, a powerful woman who had single-handedly supported her husband’s entire family.
However, they had only exchanged a few words when someone came to tell Anastasia that Harrison was looking for her.
“I’m afraid I have to excuse myself, Mrs. Calderon,” she said. “I hope we can talk again soon p>
After a polite farewell, she turned and left.
Lester watched the sway of her dress as she walked away, a flicker of sadness in his eyes.
Mignon knew her son all too well and had noticed his feelings from the start.

The man looked down at her, his eyes filled with deep affection and indulgence, and his hand moved to cover hers, their fingers intertwing intimately.
It was obvious their marriage was a strong and loving one. Her son didn’t stand a chance.
Lester followed his mother’s gaze and saw the scene unfold. A sharp pain pierced his heart, and his smile turned wistful.
