Chapter 756
Susan’s eyes instantly filled with tears as she looked helplessly at the man beside her. “Ryan…”
Watching the scene, Anastasia felt her own eyes ache.
“Hubby, I’m going to look around for a bit.”
Harrison’s icy demeanor softened slightly. “Go on. Call me if you need anything.”
Anastasia nodded and took a stroll, easily finding the hospital rooms for Crystal and Simon.
Simon had Victor with him, but Crystal’s room was empty except for a nurse.
Although her injuries weren’t as severe as Lennon’s, they were still significant. Yet Susan was completely focused on her son…
Anastasia didn’t linger, just took a quick look and turned to leave.
Figuring enough time had passed, she was heading back to find Harrison when she passed the stairwell and noticed a somewhat familiar figure sitting on the steps, his back to her.
She paused. “Carter?”
The person on the stairs started, turning around to reveal a handsome but pale face.
When he saw it was her, a faint light flickered in the boy’s dark, quiet eyes, but it was quickly hidden.
He greeted her politely, “…Ms. Sterling.”
“What are you doing here?” Anastasia had barely asked the question when she saw that one of his pant legs was rolled up, revealing a deep gash on his calf from which blood was pouring!
She frowned instantly. “You’re injured?”
With her medical training, she could tell at a glance that the wound wasn’t normal. His pant leg was soaked, yet the bleeding hadn’t stopped…
“Do you have a blood clotting disorder?”
Carter seemed distracted, his reaction a beat too slow before he nodded and replied nonchalantly, “I do.”
Anastasia’s frown deepened. “How did you get hurt? Why aren’t you getting a doctor to treat it?”
Carter was silent for a long moment before saying, “I bumped into something.”
He didn’t explain why he wasn’t seeking medical help, but Anastasia understood. Susan was so preoccupied with Lennon that she’d neglected Crystal, and she had probably forgotten this younger son entirely.
This was something Anastasia
found puzzling. Susan had been willing to be the other woman justa latch onto Ryan, or rather, the Lancaster family. After finally giving birth to Ryan’s son, shouldn’t she sure him the most?
But from what Anastasia observed, Susan cared most about Lennon. She claimed
to be protective of Carter’s fragile health by not letting him go out, but it was clear she was neglecting this son.
For one thing, with Carter’s condition, wouldn’t a truly loving mother be desperately searching for doctors to help him?
Yet, she’d heard that while Susan had made an effort at the beginning, she simply gave up after two
doctors said there was no cure for all these years, her only solution had been to lock him up and forbid him from leaving the house…
But how Susan treated her son was none of her business. After offering a word of
advice, Anastasia prepared to leave.
But after taking a single step, she
saw Carter still sitting there,
motionless, with no intention of finding a doctor. He was just watching her leave, his eyes holding a quiet, unreadable expression, and suddenly, she found she couldn’t walk away.
She didn’t know why, but while she was filled with disgust for Susan and Lennon, she couldn’t bring herself to dislike this boy. In fact, she felt a sense of sympathy, a softening in her heart.
