Chapter 40:
Candice picked up the mortgage contract that had been signed ten years ago.
She turned to the page where it specified that the guarantor must be present before any agreement concerning it could be signed.
She also started an audio recording on her phone before silently putting it away, ensuring that no one would notice.
She showed the document to Greyson and pointed at the detail.
However, before she had the chance to speak, Greyson stood up abruptly, his fingers clenching the edges of the table hard. His palms were also sweaty.
Healy sensed tension between them and thought they must have had a personal conflict. If there really was a conflict, Healy counted himself lucky. No wonder Candy had been so generous in helping him with his case.
Candice looked smugly at Greyson and asked, “What’s wrong? Mr. Harman, is there something you’d like to say?”
Greyson glared at her coldly and said, “Candy, you’d better think before you speak.”
In actuality, he wanted to ask her why she had to be so ruthless. He was already forced to concede. What more could she want from him?
He held back from calling her “Candice” because he knew “Candy” was her other identity when she practiced law overseas.
He had learned from Bettina that she was the one who prepared Candice’s second identity by taking advantage of her family’s connections in the political circle.
Candice needed the identity as she often engaged in business overseas, and having a second identity acted as insurance for her personal safety.
Candice stared back at Greyson meaningfully.
Suddenly, she laughed. “Mr. Harman, please have a seat. I have given it very careful thought before I speak.”
Meanwhile, Healy felt like he was watching a drama unfold.
Since they were enemies, he didn’t worry about being at a disadvantage.
Feeling confident, he crossed his legs and observed as Candice helped Greyson secure more money and power.
Candice pointed again at the contract and began to explain, “Mr. Harman, Mr. Glyn, I’ve explained the contents of this contract before and assured both of you that there is no problem with it. However…”
Her tone suddenly sharpened. “If this contract is falsified, then that changes everything.”
Falsified? Healy couldn’t believe his ears and nearly fell off his chair. What was Candice talking about?
Greyson’s eyes widened in shock.
Brooks looked at Greyson nervously, hesitating to speak.
Greyson gave him a look, silently telling him to stay quiet.
Candice continued, “Yes, take a closer look. This contract was drafted ten years ago. But don’t you think this page looks a little different from the others? That page must have been added later. It wasn’t originally part of the contract.”
Healy, furious at the accusation, retorted fiercely, “Are you trying to sully my name? What difference do these yellowed papers make? They look almost the same. Why should we believe you? Are you accusing me of something?”
Candice sneered as she turned her head. “Calm down, Mr. Glyn. I’m not making baseless accusations. I’ve checked. This page weighs 4.365 grams, while the rest weigh 4.983 grams. It’s obvious this page is not part of the original contract.”
Greyson’s mind was blown by the revelation. He said coldly, “Mr. Glyn, how dare you try to deceive me with a fake contract?”
Healy’s confidence wavered. He pointed at Candice and stammered, “So what if the papers weigh differently? Maybe this page was different from the others when the contract was drafted. Have you considered that?”
Healy’s words became incoherent.
Candice refused to waste more time on his excuses. She knocked on the table and continued, “Mr. Glyn, the identification center is equipped with advanced technology to handle cases like this and can provide results very quickly. It is not difficult to identify…”
“Whether a piece of paper is yellowing naturally or has been tampered with, the identification center can determine it. Mr. Glyn, if you don’t believe my words, why don’t we head there for verification now?”
She then cast a pointed look at Healy and reminded him, “However, I must warn you—once these papers are sent for identification, things could get complicated. If the results confirm my claims, you would have committed contract fraud. The law states that anyone found guilty of contract fraud shall be sentenced to more than ten years in prison or life imprisonment, along with a fine or confiscation of property.”
