In an overt manner, Candice relayed her precise location, the predicament she was in, and her potential trajectory to Milton over the phone.
“To the left.” The thug’s voice was icy.
“Understood.” In Candice’s knowledge, the left led to the shipping and storage area. It was way past working hours, and that zone would be practically deserted. It was plausible that the gangster had accomplices, who were intent on ending her life and had a vehicle ready nearby. Or perhaps they intended to move her to another place before murdering her, or they intended to execute her in the deserted cargo area directly.
Regardless of the plan, she was racing against time. She needed to extricate herself before Milton could locate her.
“Could we discuss this? Surely, I’m entitled to know my alleged crimes so I can make amends, right? One doesn’t just die without reason, correct?” Inhaling deeply, Candice pushed herself to remain composed.
She did everything in her power to buy more time, praying for rescue to reach her.
“Humph! A harmful attorney like you merits a fate worse than death!” The gangster’s agitation spiked, his voice adopting an intense tone.
Confused, Candice retorted, “Harmful? I’m usually someone’s savior. Have you got your wires crossed?”
“There’s no mistake. You’ve shattered lives and homes. I’ve come across plenty of ruthless attorneys like you. I put an end to them on sight!” His voice reached a fever pitch as he lost his grip on his temper.
An epiphany struck Candice. The one pulling the strings, intending to cause her harm, was none other than Cathy! She had almost overlooked this individual. With Corless incarcerated, Cathy had been dragged into the chaos after the acquisition of Warren Building Materials. Given Cathy’s volatile nature, it was hardly surprising she would go to such lengths. Candice had underestimated this looming threat.
Attempting to reason with the gangster, Candice pleaded, “Have you considered the complete picture? Why are you convinced that I’m the culprit? Have you been wronged in some way? Tell me. Perhaps I could be of assistance. It’s possible you’re misconstruing my intentions. I’m an attorney with a focus on human rights, after all.”

The mobster’s stride faltered, and Candice could sense the knife’s tip receding slightly.
She believed she had finally reached him, swaying his perspective.
However, the mobster’s emotions flared anew. “Damn it! I’m going to rip that lying tongue out of your mouth. I won’t be fooled by your deceptive talk. I lost my folks, all due to trusting the sweet lies of attorneys.” With those words, he shoved her roughly forward.
Candice stumbled, losing grip of her mobile phone, which soared through the air before hitting the ground. The screen of the device glowed, revealing an ongoing call timer.
Oh no! She was in deep trouble.
At first, she had a chance to sway the mobster’s mind. Delving into the intricacies of criminal psychology suggested that reaching out to his soul could incite initial resistance, a positive sign in her book. He would succumb to emotional chaos only when she hit the bull’s-eye. Then it would be a matter of skillful negotiation. When his rage subsided, the tide could be turned in her favor.
