Chapter 716
Chapter 716:
As the topic of singing arose, Candice’s thoughts involuntarily wandered back to a time when she and Milton had sung a love song together. It was a pinnacle of musical enchantment, second only to that fateful night a decade ago in the cold storage.
The memory sent her into a trance, lost in a misty reverie. After a fleeting moment, she shook her head vigorously, snapping back to reality.
The thought of performing at a law firm gathering was inconceivable to her. She was not one to seek the limelight or showcase herself before others.
Moreover, a glance at the time revealed it was nearly ten o’clock, signaling her time to depart.
What if she stayed out all night? A shiver ran down her spine, an ominous premonition crawling over her. If she spent the night outside, she would get an earful. She dared not challenge his wrath. Yet, after closer reflection, why would she have to listen to him? Who was he to her? A battle raged within her, as her heart grappled with unexplainable conflicts.
The assistant clasped Candice’s arm. “Miss Blake, we beseech you, extend an invitation for us to sing. Please.”
Candice, sporting a gentle smile, patted the assistant’s hand and relented, “Very well, I shall grant your request.” Retrieving her handbag, she slipped twenty thousand in cash to Bettina. “Tonight, the treat is on me, Betty!” Her face was red, and she was slightly intoxicated.
Bettina did not refuse. “Okay. Thanks!”
She could sense Candice’s buoyant mood that evening.
Candice then removed thirty thousand in cash from her bag and pressed it into her assistant’s arms. “Take this. Book the most extravagant room and order the finest wine. Tonight, I shall foot the bill.”
“Hell yeah!” The assistant lawyer and the receptionist embraced, leaping in jubilation.
“Let’s make our way to Vertigo Karaoke!” Bettina suggested, rising to her feet and beckoning them.

One by one, everyone stood up.
“I’ll pass. You all can go ahead,” Candice remarked, lifting her bag. As she rose, she felt her body shake, her legs growing feeble. She muttered a curse under her breath. Who on earth said that beer was light? The impact wasn’t as immediate.
“Ah!” The assistant lawyer’s disappointed cry filled the air. “Miss Blake, why do you decline? Such a pity. Tonight, you are the star of the show.”
Caught amidst the turmoil in her mind, Candice made her final decision to return home. Waving her hand, she bid them farewell. “I shall take my leave. Enjoy yourselves. Besides, I am not fond of singing. The clamor becomes too much to bear.”
With that, she strode towards the exit.
Laughter echoed behind her, accompanied by a sly remark. “Oh, I see now. Miss Blake, you can leave. After all, it would be rather challenging to explain to someone, wouldn’t it?”
