Chapter 655
Chapter 655:
“You’ve left this behind.” Passing a sunflower-tinted document pouch to Candice, Milton announced, “It was on your nightstand. I thought you would need it.”
“Ah!” Candice’s eyes lit up in surprise as she exclaimed, “Jesus! These are the documents for today’s court hearing! I double-checked them last night before I fell asleep, but I completely blanked this morning! Your timing is impeccable, otherwise it would have been a disaster. I should be on my way. Thanks a lot!”
She gave him a thankful glance, and then spun around quickly to leave. As she prepared to ascend, Milton caught her by the arm.
“What’s wrong? Is there something else?” She looked back, clearly flustered. This kind of haste and confusion was uncharacteristic for her.
Unexpectedly, Milton extended his arm, encircling her neck, and gently drew her closer.
Alarmed, Candice recoiled instinctively. Was he seriously considering an intimate gesture here, in front of the courthouse? Would he really impose a kiss upon her here?
Her intuition kicked in, prompting her to resist. She couldn’t bear the thought of public ridicule.
“Please, don’t kiss me here!” Her voice hushed, she shielded her face with the papers, leaving only her feigned ferocious eyes exposed, watching him warily.
Chuckling, Milton moved the papers aside with his free hand and delicately brushed some crumbs from her lips.
Witnessing her guarded demeanor, he found it amusing. “What’s running through your mind? Just cleaning up your lips. Carry on. Stay calm, I’m right here with you. After court, I’ve planned a Japanese dinner for us. I’ve already reserved a table.” A blush spread across Candice’s face. It turned out he was just helping clean her lips. She had been overly suspicious.
The embarrassment crept up on her. “Oh. You need to be prepared too, you know. Once the trial concludes, news of the outcome will swiftly disseminate. Come sunrise tomorrow, the stock value of Warren Building Materials will most likely nosedive. The optimal moment for you to invest and short-sell is just before the crash.”

“Got it. Everything is in place,” Milton affirmed, nodding his agreement.
“Remember, nullify the contract, stop the loan payment, and default on the balance payment…” She halted mid-sentence.
Milton, without warning, encircled her waist with his arms, held her close briefly, and then let go. Even though the embrace was fleeting, it was still in a public space.
Candice’s face turned red with embarrassment. She was momentarily stunned, her train of thought derailed.
Milton gazed at her tenderly, playfully tweaking her flushed cheek.
“I get it. I’ve got everything handled. Now off you go. You’ll be late if you waste time.”
Upon hearing his words, Candice muttered something under her breath, spun on her heel, and bolted towards the courtroom, files clutched tight.
Her lawyer’s robe billowed in the crisp autumn air, giving her the amusing semblance of a waddling penguin from afar, adorably charming.
