Chapter 18
Chapter 18:
In the evening.
Candice was at the Hope Law Office, perusing paperwork when her phone screen suddenly lit up. There were two WhatsApp message notifications.
She opened the messages.
Bettina had sent one: “Join us at 8 o’clock this evening at the Starlight Pub to toast your newly single status. I’ll be there waiting for you.”
The second message read, “Meet me at my house tonight,” and was apparently from Greyson.
She stared at the screen, anger burning in her heart. “Avoid getting in touch with me; for your own sake!”
After typing this, she abruptly stopped.
Then she erased everything she had just written.
In the end, she decided not to respond to his message.
This was the first time Greyson had reached out to her. Her feelings for him, nurtured for ten years, wouldn’t suddenly disappear, but she just wanted some peace and quiet.
Ignoring his text, she locked her phone.
She made up her mind to pay Greyson no attention.
She stayed in the office until seven, then departed. She and Bettina had started their law firm in the heart of the central business district, surrounded by skyscrapers.
To get to the pub, she took the subway.
The sky was peaceful and expansive.
No one was around as she walked along the street.
Behind her, she noticed a flurry of quick footsteps—it was more than one person. She frowned, sensing that something might happen.
Sure enough, a group of hooligans surrounded her with whistles as soon as she turned around.
Candice raised her guard. Well, damn it! Madilyn was not the kind to give up easily! The last attempt to kill her had failed, and yet here they were trying the same trick again!

Last time, she had been too weak to fight.
But now, she was ready to go beast mode!
She was a Taekwondo expert with a black belt.
Throughout middle school, she had hidden her attractiveness to avoid awkward situations, but she was often harassed in college. To protect herself, she took Taekwondo lessons.
The thug in front of her clapped his hands and stared menacingly at Candice.
“She didn’t lie to me, I can tell. Very stunning—she’s something to admire and desire! Our efforts have paid off.”
“Hey, beautiful, aren’t you lonely all alone? Come on, join us for some fun tonight. Tut, tut, you’re smoking hot!”
The ringleader of the thugs approached her and ran a hand through her long, silky hair. He reassured her with a hand on her shoulder and said, “Don’t worry. Tonight, we plan to do something that will make you very pleased.”
His words made Candice nauseous.
She lifted her hand, grabbed the man’s wrist, and suplexed him.
The leader wailed in agony.
“What are you waiting for? Get her! What will people say about me if we don’t catch her?”
Candice hoped for a swift and easy victory. She threw all she had at another hooligan.
Then she directed her fury at a third man, shooting her foot up to his groin. In an instant, the guy let out a squeal reminiscent of a pig being slaughtered.
She handled some of them with ease because of her expertise.
But then, three more hooligans suddenly appeared.
She struggled, retreated, and planned her escape.
The number of adversaries was too high.
And she was alone.
The ringleader seized her shoulders and tore her clothing.
