Biting her finger in frustration, her mind was in complete turmoil.
She knew she had acted impulsively that day.
She had burst into the meeting room without hesitation and stopped him from placing his bid. Later, in his office, they had nearly crossed a line.
But what really stood out was that she had kissed him back. Even when he finally pulled away, she still clung tightly to his neck.
If it hadn’t been for Bettina’s timely interruption, she didn’t know what would have happened next.
Damn it! She slapped her forehead hard. She must have been out of her mind to kiss him back like that.
The very thought made her cringe. She couldn’t bear to think about it any longer.
It took Candice thirty minutes to get to Hope Law Firm.
As she walked into the meeting room, Bettina rolled her eyes and exclaimed, “Finally! Do you know how long you’ve kept us waiting? More than three hours! Come on, tell me the truth. Where have you been all this time?”
Sitting across from Candice, Mona maintained a poker face with her arms crossed. The other partners sat quietly, waiting for Candice to explain herself.
Candice hurriedly took a seat and apologized, “I’m so sorry. Have you really been waiting for me for over three hours?”
Mona replied, “No, we were discussing some difficult cases.” She stared at Candice curiously.
Candice went on high alert. Did they suspect anything? She nervously pulled up her collar.
Unexpectedly, Mona pointed to Candice’s neck. “What’s that on your neck?”
Candice froze. Had Milton left a hickey on her neck? She had been in such a rush that she hadn’t checked in the mirror after leaving his office.
She cautiously touched her smooth skin and chuckled awkwardly. “Oh, it’s probably just a mosquito bite.”

Mona giggled and said, “I was mistaken. There’s no mark on your neck.”
Candice’s mind went blank as she felt her face flush. Mona had tricked her into confessing. As lawyers, they both knew how to spot a lie, and Mona had seen through Candice’s excuse. Feeling a bit embarrassed, Candice looked away in annoyance.
Bettina glanced quickly at Mona and thought she was so clever. Without a doubt, she knew Candice must have been with Milton.
“Ahem. Let’s get started with the meeting. I’m starving. I haven’t had lunch yet,” Bettina said after clearing her throat.
Mona shrugged and said, “Sure, let’s begin.”
Candice tried to compose herself and focus on the discussion, pretending nothing had happened earlier.
“I think Hope Law Firm’s performance this year will greatly exceed our goal. Candice has taken on the most cases and contributed the most. I’m considering opening a branch,” Bettina proposed.
