Chapter 998
Chapter 1006:
Sadie’s initial sadness turned to laughter at Candice’s words.
Mona patted Candice on the shoulder, her voice filled with admiration. “Impressive, Candice. The human rights lawsuit in Thonde is a tough nut to crack. Have you managed to resolve it successfully?”
Candice nodded, a sense of accomplishment in her voice. “Indeed, I’ve not only resolved it but also emerged victorious. The opposition chose not to appeal, so there was nothing left to worry about. It was a challenging journey, but we achieved a favorable outcome.”
Mona commended Candice. “You’ve truly outdone yourself, Candice. This may well be the pinnacle of your career in human rights cases.”
Candice agreed with a modest nod. “Yes, it certainly feels that way.” Just then, Bettina emerged from her office, spotting Candice and swiftly whisking her away. “You’re finally back! I felt so lost without you! Let’s chat in my office.”
With that, Bettina gave the receptionist and Sadie a pointed look. “Why are you still here? Get back to work.”
Mona, wearing a smile, turned and waved her hand. “I’m off to court. No need to prepare my lunch. I won’t be back for it.”
“Alright,” the receptionist replied, her disappointment evident as she returned to her desk.
Once the office had cleared, Bettina eagerly dragged Candice into her office and closed the door behind them. She guided Candice to a comfortable sofa before expressing her concern.
“Let me take a look at you, Candice. Have you lost weight? I doubt you could have eaten well or slept properly during your month-long stay abroad. You had to put in a lot of effort in the case, and the cuisine in Thonde was unfamiliar to you.”
“Who told you that?” Candice held Bettina’s hand, a mixture of emotions playing across her face. “You might be surprised, Bettina, but I adapted quite well. In fact, I might have even gained some weight!”

Bettina’s gaze wandered toward the closed door as she asked, “Why didn’t you inform me of your return ahead of time? I could have sent someone to pick you up. Did you go home, or did you come straight here from the airport?”
Candice hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to respond.
Noticing Candice’s silence, Bettina understood immediately. She asked carefully, “Did you visit the neighboring building just now?”
Candice admitted with a sigh, “Yes, I did. After closing the case, I felt obligated to deliver the news to the client in person.”
Bettina fell silent, her expression a mix of disbelief and unspoken questions. She had believed Milton and Candice had at last had an ideal ending, so she was shocked to learn that it had been the opposite. After a moment, Bettina bit her lip and, with trepidation, revealed her plan. “Candice, I’ve been discussing things with my brother. We’re planning to move the law firm to his building. I was waiting for you to return to discuss it with you.”
