Candice pushed Bettina gently into her apartment and replied, “Let’s talk in here. This is where I live.” Then she shut the door behind them.
After Bettina entered, she looked between Candice, Milton, and then the door behind them.
She raised a finger, pointing first at Candice, then at Milton, and said, “Okay. You live here, but Milton took a shower here, and you went to the apartment across the corridor to get his…”
“Bathrobe? Didn’t you tell me last night that Raul lived in the opposite apartment? What… What’s happening here? I’m confused.”
“Here’s the thing. Milton stayed in Raul’s apartment last night…” Candice began to explain.
“Oh, so Milton doesn’t live here? Then why did he just take a shower in your bathroom? Don’t talk nonsense. I’m not going to believe you if you do.”
Bettina continued with contempt, “I truly underestimated you, Candy. You two have come to this point. And I had no idea.”
Candice was speechless.
Glancing at Milton, she opened her mouth again, but no words came to her defense.
And Milton just stood there, smiling like an idiot. Damn it! He didn’t say a word. He didn’t intend to clarify anything at all.
“And why do you have a cake?” Bettina noticed the cake on the table. She walked over and asked again in confusion, “What happened to it? Why is it messed up? It looks delicate and expensive.”
“Milton brought that cake here, but he almost dropped it. He got frosting all over himself trying to save the cake, so he took a shower here. I just helped him get his bathrobe from Raul’s apartment. That’s all, okay?” Candice attempted to explain again.
However, Bettina’s focus had shifted.
“Candy, today is your birthday. I come to accompany you every year on this day. But you never let me buy you a present, not even a cake. But… How come Milton is allowed to buy you a birthday cake while I’m not? Oh, my God, that hurts my feelings so much.” Pretending to be offended and frowning, Bettina pointed at Milton.
Not knowing how to explain herself, Candice stammered, “No… No, that’s not the case. I didn’t ask him to buy me a birthday cake.”
Squinting at Candice, Milton remarked, “You told me that it wasn’t your birthday today. So if Bettina’s telling the truth, then your birthday on your identification file is your real one. Were you fooling me?”
Candice was at an utter loss for words.
