Chapter 700:
Candice was left dumbfounded, feeling as though he saw her merely as a mannequin for testing new products.
“I need to leave now. Jarrod’s been waiting for me at the door for a while.”
Milton nodded.
With the call concluded, Candice quickly grabbed her bag and rushed out the door, making her way to the Hope Law Firm office.
Truth be told, it had been a while since Candice last set foot in the premises of Hope Law Firm.
For her own well-being, she had decided to work from home leading up to the court hearing and then took an extra three days for recovery. Her break had been substantial.
Candice made her way into the lobby, catching the receptionist’s eye, who greeted her warmly. “Miss Blake, what a pleasant surprise to see you again! We’ve missed your presence.”
Returning the smile, Candice asked, “Did anyone drop by looking for me while I was away?”
“This time, the Corless case was an absolute triumph, and numerous clients have come here in admiration. It has certainly kept Miss Reeves quite occupied,” the receptionist replied, flipping through the visitor register. “Well, it seems that some clients from previous cases have also paid us a visit. Your assistant has been quite the host. Notably, Mr. Harman visited you twice, but unfortunately, you weren’t here either time.”
“Mr. Harman?” Candice was briefly taken aback before realizing Greyson was being mentioned.
“What was his purpose of visiting?” Candice asked.
“He didn’t disclose much, really. Simply said he was checking up on you,” the receptionist replied.
“I see,” Candice nodded, feeling a growing sense of detachment toward Greyson. His existence, at times, felt as though it had faded into oblivion, almost as if their decade-long shared past had never been.

When Candice reached Bettina’s office, she knocked on the door and pushed it open without waiting for a response.
Bettina, buried in her own thoughts, was hunched over her desk, fingers threaded through her hair. She hadn’t even noticed Candice’s entrance.
Catching her attention, Candice said, “Betty?”
Taken aback, Bettina looked up to find Candice standing there. She stuttered, “Candy, you’re back at work.” Perplexed, Candice approached Bettina and scrutinized her from head to toe. “What’s the matter with you, Bettina? Did something go wrong? Anything weighing on you? Do you need my assistance?”
Without warning, Candice reached out and brushed away a tear trickling down Bettina’s cheek. Candice was taken aback. “Are you crying?”
Bettina hastily got up, swiped her cheek dry, and gave a clumsy smile. “What are you talking about? I was just yawning because I’m tired. Why would I burst into tears out of nowhere? What’s going on in your mind?”
“Daytime drowsiness? What kept you up last night?” Candice’s lawyer instincts were on high alert. Bettina’s short hair was disheveled, and her eyes glistened with unshed tears. Her whole demeanor screamed unrest and atypical behavior.
