Chapter 739
Chapter 739:
A wave of embarrassment washed over her. She bit into her lower lip, leaving an indelible impression, her chest rising and falling with quickened breaths.
In a sudden motion, Milton sharply turned the steering wheel, guiding the car in the opposite direction.
Candice, taken aback by the abrupt change, clutched the handrail for support. With shock lacing her voice, she inquired, “Where are we headed? This is not the way home.”
“We’re going to the courthouse,” Milton responded, his words catching her off guard.
It surpassed all her expectations.
“Why are we going there? What do you need from the courthouse?” Candice demanded, perplexed.
“To obtain our marriage certificate. It’s the proper way to live together,” Milton answered.
Candice couldn’t fathom Milton’s reasoning. It left her stunned.
“Are you out of your mind? It’s in the wee hours of the morning, and they won’t be open. Besides, the courthouse is in the opposite direction. Stop joking around and turn the car back.”
Candice tugged at Milton’s arm, hoping to change his mind, but he remained resolute.
“It’ll take an hour to reach there. If nobody’s there, we’ll just make a call and have them come.”
“No, that’s not what I meant earlier…” Candice’s thoughts were a jumble.
She had just expressed her reluctance to live with him.
However, Milton seemed convinced that she desired marriage.
How had he come to that conclusion?
“You don’t want to marry me? Who else do you plan to marry if not me?” Milton’s anger seeped into his words, his tone demanding an answer.

Caught off guard, Candice stammered.
“Does Greyson still have a special place in your heart?” Milton, his patience dwindling, interjected, “Stop longing for Greyson. Don’t even think about him for a second.”
“You’re mistaken…” Candice attempted to defend herself, but her efforts fell flat. The situation was spiraling into further complexity. How could this possibly be connected to Greyson? There was a palpable sense of wrongness in the web of causality that bound them together.
“In that case, accompany me to obtain the marriage license,” Milton declared with a domineering air. Candice was rendered speechless.
Milton drove on the elevated highway toward the courthouse.
His statement threw her mind into disarray.
So many unresolved problems weighed upon her: Erica, Sigrid, and Paisley; the tangled intricacies of noble clan unions; the shadowy individuals seeking to frame Milton; the incidents on her looming wedding night and the birthday party of the ambassador’s wife.
