Chapter 571
Chapter 571:
The other person seemed to provide a positive response. Leaning against the wall, Milton took a deep breath.
He then replied, “I see. Keep someone monitoring Corless. He won’t behave properly. Even if it wasn’t him this time, I’m unsure if he’ll do anything else.”
After saying that, he ended the call and threw the phone on the sofa.
When he turned around, he noticed Candice standing nearby.
He was taken aback. Oh no! He hadn’t expected her to be awake. He should have stepped outside to make the phone call. He didn’t want her to overhear anything about the car accident. He feared it would trigger her illness again.
“Hey. Are you hungry? What would you like to eat?” he asked.
“I heard you on the phone,” Candice said.
“Oh, it’s nothing. Just work stuff.” He tried to brush it off, not wanting to talk about the car accident.
“I heard it. It’s about the car accident. It’s fine. You can tell me. I can handle it. Plus, I want to know,” Candice said.
Milton hesitated. After all, it wasn’t good news.
Seeing his silence, she asked directly, “Do you think yesterday’s car accident was connected to Corless? I don’t think so. It happened right after the charity event. He left around the same time as us. It’s unlikely he could plan it all so quickly. He had to find out my address first before staging the car accident.”
Milton’s gaze turned icy. “You were in great danger yesterday. If you and that middle-aged woman had crossed the road simultaneously, or if you had crossed first and walked in front of her, or if the truck had targeted you… I can’t even imagine the consequences!” Pausing briefly, he continued, “The middle-aged woman who was hit yesterday didn’t survive the trip to the hospital.”
Candice was filled with pity. Another life had passed away right before her eyes.
Her body trembled slightly.
Quickly, Milton walked over to comfort her, holding her in his arms. “Don’t worry about it,” he said in a reassuring voice. “I’ll investigate what happened.”

Candice shook her head and replied, “I’m fine. It’s just that I couldn’t help but think about it. It was almost impossible for the truck to hit me. I remember the middle-aged woman asking me if I would cross the road when the green light was on. She crossed without me. Little did I know that it would be the last time she’d speak.”
Milton furrowed his brow. “You didn’t cross because you were waiting for me?” he asked.
Candice nodded, “Yes.”
Relieved, Milton let out a sigh. As long as she was okay, that was what mattered most to him.
Thinking back to that fateful moment, Candice added, “I took a closer look at the middle-aged woman. She must have been around 50 years old or more, with clothes that looked worn out. I could tell that she came from a poor family. She didn’t look very well and seemed to be carrying some worries on her mind.”
“Yes, it’s true,” Milton replied with a somber tone. “I heard that the deceased’s family was in debt. Her husband had cancer, and although the operation was successful, the follow-up treatment was difficult for the family to bear. They owed a lot of money. On top of that, their daughter was accepted into college this year, but they couldn’t afford the tuition. She had planned to give up her studies and work to support her family.”
